according to her roommate Derek Powell. He and his boyfriend Chris were on the receiving end of those epithets on October 29, when darling Nikki –apparently upset that her roommate had friends over, and perhaps herself a bit tipsy– swung her shoes at guests, shoved guests, destroyed a family heirloom, “kneed” a guest, and told people that her male companion would beat their asses, according to an exclusive report on Think Progress. And yes, per Powell in a letter to the Miss Universe organization, used those words as well as:
downgraded people based on their physical appearance and economic status.
Miss VA kept it klassy when she spoke with Think Progress about the story:
The guy that’s in my pageant office is gay and he’s my best friend in the world, I talk to him every day,
then denied that she had damaged the heirloom, saying:
Anyone can take a picture of a broken door.
When Think Progress explained they had her text messages between her and her roommate about the broken furniture, she abruptly ended the call. Yes, as Charles Reagan Wilson, a professor of history and Southern culture at the University of Mississippi told the New York Times, Southern manners are definitely on the decline!
Manners are one of many things that are central to a Southerner’s identity, but they are not primary anymore. Things have eroded.
In his letter to the Miss Universe organization –which faced a homophobic scandal, a nip-slip outrage and sex tape reveal courtesy of stripper-ministering Carrrie Prejean– Derek Powell wrote this about darling Nikki, a Radiological Engineer at Dominion Resources with an MS in Nuclear Engineering:
Her comments have outraged and insulted the gay people of Richmond and the community is upset that someone like her would represent the Commonwealth of Virginia. Many young girls look up to your organization and look at these title holders as role models. This is not the kind of person that you want representing your honorable organization.
