Citizens United Making Hillary Movie

With CNN and NBC/Universal having scrapped their plans to make Hillary Clinton TV movies (a doc and biopic, respectively), citing pressure from both political sides and lack of cooperation from sources, rightwing Citizen Untied is ready to jump in the fray.

Which seems seems pretty hypocritical, because it was the RNC that got all sandy-pantied when the two mainstream media pieces were announced–dropping the banhammmer on both networks sponsoring Republican primary debates. But I guess if a Republican-leaning group makes a movie about an opposition candidate, it’s okay and should not at all be seen as biased, even if the MSM films were predicted to be favorable from their point of view?

In 2008, Citizens United successfully sued the U.S. government over another Hillary Clinton movie, imaginatively titled Hillary: The Movie.   The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that blocking the airing of Hillary: The Movie on the grounds that it amounted to political advertising was an unconstitutional breach of free speech.

David Bossie, head of Citizens United has not yet revealed the title of the new Clinton movie, but CU is claiming it will be released theatrically as well as on TV and DVD, though no actual deals have been announced.  Bossie told the Hollywood Reporter:

This is why I went to the Supreme Court. Now that I won that case, I can do whatever I want with this new movie. I can advertise it on radio and TV, show it on TV whenever I want to — all the things they stopped us from doing with Hillary: The Movie.

The Hollywood Reporter comments:

Like Hillary: The Movie, the upcoming film is not expected to be a flattering portrayal of the presumed Democratic candidate for president, though it will primarily explore her life as secretary of state from 2009-13. Hillary: The Movie, on the other hand, was released prior to her appointment to the State Department and was about her roles as first lady of Arkansas, first lady of the U.S. and U.S. Senator from New York.

The CNN doc might not have been exactly laudatory. Director Charles Ferguson wrote:

In Arkansas, she joined the boards of Walmart and Tyson Foods. One of the largest donors to the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation is the government of Saudi Arabia. The Clintons’ personal net worth now probably exceeds $200 million, and while earned legally, both the money’s sources and the Clintons’ public statements indicate a strong aversion to rocking boats or making powerful enemies.

Biases aside, it feels really sleazy for the Republicans to bitch and moan and complain and threaten boycotts about Hillary Clinton movies, and then have one of their apparatchik PACs start crowing about its own hatchet job.

Why bother making these movies has any market research been done about them? As a lefty I would watch a movie about the GOP but only if it was accurate why I want accurate information.
The GOP we know is much more emotional and in touch with their inner child throwing a tantrum they want a reason to go Drama Queen on Hilary or any other Dem.
But honestly just what new can they put in their movie that Right Wing Media has not mentioned before?

A biased movie filled with lies will if seen by a swing voter likely have a positive effect for Hilary since the more the swing voter likes the movie the more likely they are to talk about it.
Unless you swing voter lives in a super Red District talking about a Hilary movie full of lies is likely to result in someone pointing out the movie lied.
This makes the swing voter look like a fool. The more the swing voter likes the movie the more likely they are to go on the net and research the claims the movie makes.
Once the swing voter finds out the claims are false any bets that swing voter will be less likely to vote GOP?

The GOP needs to keep swing voters away from movies like this and hate media in general if they want to win.
They need to find a way to rally their base with hate and not let regular voters know what they are saying my I suggest Rush, Glen, O’Reily etc all switch over to pay for view?

Learning the truth about any politician is enough to sour the public on them.

The GOP in order to win a majority of younger pro Women, Gay, Dark People voters needs new ideas that people actually like.
There are limits to how much propaganda and one sided arguments can do to change voters minds when those voters can’t find jobs, are living with their parents, struggling with student loans and even if they have a job they can’t make a living on the minimum wage.
The GOP has to realize they need new ideas scapegoating everyone different is not getting them new voters.

I’m sort of perplexed that the right-wing hasn’t noticed that they’ve entered the zone of diminishing returns as concerns these swift-boat style attacks.

I’d guess at this point it’s simply opportunistic media producers recognizing that rich right-wingers are dupes for expensive propaganda?

In response to Watt4Bob @ 6

What would Hillary want to hide anyway?

What needs to be exposed is the “power of money,” and how it has advanced the interests of political parties and powerful corporate contributors at the Republic’s expense.

Money buys lies and bullshit. Merit stands on it own.

We do not get enough merit from DC. The American people are gamed, conned, “brownshirted,” by the power of the “monied interest,” who have only one thing in mind. Extraction of your money/liberty by any means necessary protecting myopic self interest, greed!

Who needs a movie? HRC’s record as a war hawk, corporate shill, and of course 3rd way DLCer ought to be reason enough for any liberal not to vote for her. Want a woman President? Vote Elizabeth Warren in 2016.

The republicans and their dastardly minions will do ANYTHING to regain the White House. Just watch. They spent what, a billion$$ last time to lose. I suppose they will likely spend $2 billion this time. Hey, the Kochs alone have that much lying around in their desk drawer.

@JamesJoyce #8……It’s gonna get really bad this time.

@ Watt4Bob #6…GOP never learns. I’d bet they use their “Swift boat” strategy but X10 against Hillary. They really don’t like her and they are DESPERATE to retake the WH.
