30 year old Natalie Hynde — daughter of The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde and The Kinks’ Ray Davies — was arrested last week in an act of civil disobedience protesting fracking company Cuadrilla in Balcombe, West Sussex, UK. Reports indicate that Hynde super glued herself to her boyfriend at the entrance of a drilling site.
She was joined in her efforts by Human Rights Activist (and former wife to Mick Jagger) Bianca Jagger, who is featured in the video above explaining the background of this specific site.
A survey of the Balcombe parish conducted last year indicated that over 82% of residents opposed plans to begin fracking, a large number citing concerns over increased road traffic and pollution of water supplies. These issues only scratch the surface of the potential consequences of fracking, a process used to drill for natural gas.
In an article/ live blog detailing the potential harm that could come to Balcombe, and updating readers on day to day actions, Frack Off warns;
Cuadrilla are faced with having to try to push through the drilling despite the near unanimous opposition of the local community. Across Sussex people are equally unkeen on the threatened industrialisation of the county.
Recent protests confirm that the citizens of Balcombe are indeed watching. Hynde, a frequent participant in enviornmental acts of civil disobedience, has previously stated : “If I can use who I am to bring attention to our cause then that’s great.”
Indeed, her rock lineage affords her a bit of celebrity to shed some light on the actions of many. But the truth is that everybody has the ability to make a dent simply by speaking up. After all, in the words of Ray Davies, “No matter what you do or who you are, everybody’s a star.”
