Late Night: Either I Am Getting Old, and/or This Is Just…I’m Speechless

Okay, first Thurston Moore from the art-punk band Sonic Youth is the narrator for two years of National Geographic’s “Hard Time” prison documentary, which was pretty damn freaky.

And now, former Black Flag singer and noted spoken word punk rock uber-dude Henry Rollins is the host of “Animal Underworld,” where you can watch Rollins’ veins bulge, as he narrates in the commercial

I wrestle an alligator…kill a snake and eat its still beating heart.

and then lets rats run over his feet before eating a roasted one. Because of all of this–per my DRV guide write up– is Rollins seeking

to find where the the true boundaries are in the human-animal relationship.

National Geographic senior vice president Geoff Davis explained to the Hollywood Reporter:

It’s really an investigation into our relationship with animals. It’s covering the full range from the off-beat and quirky to the potentially illicit. And our approach to [the latter] is to make sure that we’re obviously not encouraging that behavior. Our standards and practices group is something that really sets us apart. We’re always gong to come through the filter of the National Geographic mission and make sure that we’re doing that in a highly credible and responsible manner.

Which is why Rollins will be visiting the Road Kill Cafe on Route 66 in Seligman Arizona, and more exotic locales to watch people drink frog milkshakes and munch on tarantulas. And why on the Rollins-hosted NatGeo special “Snake Underworld,” which features Slayer guitarist Kerry Kelly’s python collection, there was a segment featuring a guy who shoots up black mamba venom to create naturally occurring snake venom antibodies.

What’s next? Rob Zombie hosting a interior design show?

Lisa!

Yes we are all getting old and that really is just ….

EvilDrPuma | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:07 pm 2

Oooooooooookay then.

Margaret | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:07 pm 3

Because of all of this–per my DRV guide write up– is Rollins seeking “to find where the the true boundaries are in the human-animal relationship.”

The boundaries are that people can plan ahead and they are supposed to able to conduct a the cost/benefit analysis of doing stupid shit like wrestling alligators. And now you don;t have to eat a still beating snake heart but can instead have something much more appetizing.

DrDick | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:07 pm 4

On a different , but related note, I fixed a wonderful beef and Chinese broccoli stir fry for dinner with all local ingredients (except the soy sauce and wine) and substituted local wild elk for the beef. Wonderful!

Eating beating snake hearts is so last year’s news. Tony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern both did that years ago.

I’m unable to post comments it seems.

Oh terrific….Two more months of listening to these two Bozos declaring how very conservative they are.

AdamPDX | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:15 pm 9

Thanks to you guys… Anthony Noel got to to spend another whole day annoying a Presidential Candidate about an organization that there is just one member in… him.

When I post a diary that has real evidence shows someone is being deceptive to a friend of the left… like a Presidential Candidate… DON’T DELETE IT!

You’ve let Anthony Noel spend another day annoying Rocky Anderson about the NDA.

AdamPDX | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:23 pm 15

Thanks to Fire Dog Lake… I just had to send a letter apologizing to ROCKY ANDERSON.

I had to apologize to Rocky Anderson for all the drama Anthony Noel is causing pretending to be the leader of an New Progressive Alliance Anthony Noel is telling Rocky Anderson has hundreds of members.

mzchief | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:24 pm 16

Seems to me that the 1%er-sponsored message here is that real men don’t have any respect for the lives of others similar to this police person who apparently decided that he should be judge, jury and executioner for an obviously very sick person out of his mind.

AdamPDX | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:27 pm 17

I just got to watch this get posted one that old NPA mailing list I was still on

Anthony: “Nope, sorry Rocky, you don’t get to rewrite our organization’s platform. It is the work of hundreds of commenters during the NPA’s founding at FireDogLake; of dozens of supporters; of the steering committee; and of six current and legacy Progressive organizations. You either agree with it or you don’t. If it “doesn’t go far enough” that means you agree with it. There is nothing stopping you from saying you want it to be even stronger; indeed, we would welcome such a statement in your endorsement announcement.

EvilDrPuma | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:30 pm 18

Now… Fire Dog Lake can apologize to Rocky Anderson for deleting that diary.

That would be better than his filmmaking. Zombie is a terrible filmmaker.

JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin | Tuesday May 29, 2012 08:51 pm 42

Does Rollins need the work that badly? This was funny, ableit unintentionally.

Roecker is very followable! He is adorable, handsome, witty, talented and charming beyond measure. And a totally decent dude to boot.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday May 29, 2012 09:02 pm 46

I think Nat Geo is looking for indie cred, what with having Thurston Moore narrate a prison documentary series and Rollins do first Snake Underworld and now the three episodes of Animal Underworld.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday May 29, 2012 09:03 pm 47

Are pantry moths the same moths that eat clothes?

AitchD | Tuesday May 29, 2012 09:04 pm 48
In response to DrDick @ 44

In the first and 18th place, there is nothing coherent about the Internet.

What is wrong with someone’s eating a snake’s beating heart as long as he’s not wearing animal fur?

No? Maybe? Conditionally to be considered?

AitchD | Tuesday May 29, 2012 09:06 pm 49
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 47

hahaha.

Moths don’t eat clothes, they lay their eggs in the clothing and the larvae do the damage.

I gather that you’ve smelled moth balls?

DrDick | Tuesday May 29, 2012 09:07 pm 50
In response to AitchD @ 48

I don’t have a problem with it, though I do not think it is something I would do. I also do not have problems with wearing fur or eating all kinds of other animals, especially those wearing fur. PETA is one of my least favorite organizations.

DrDick | Tuesday May 29, 2012 09:08 pm 51

PETA just opened up in Echo Park. I am trying to hire a bacon wrapped hot dog lady and a meat food truck to park out front and invite a bunch of us leather, fur and feather wearing folk to frolic on the sidewalk.

Well, my main question to clarify: Do pantry moth larva eat wool and fur, because I definitely have pantry moths. The electric flyswatter is very handy against them. And my closets are loaded with lavender, cloves and thyme to keep them out, but I still woud feel better knowing the ones in the kitchen will not escalate to destroying my cashmere.

I think I’m going too.

My mistake for laughing — I read it wrong as ‘party moths’. Being honest. I could say as ‘panty moths’ haha.

I lost some cashmeres to moths, ones I couldn’t weave back to cloth. Everything I want to protect I seal. Jackets and suits are in plastic garment bags and sealed with tape around the hanger holes. Inside are small cedar planks. All my sweaters are in a large blanket chest I lined with cedar planks, the sweaters are in a large plastic garment bag laid sideways. Woolen thug caps and scarves are in a separate plastic bag, sealed with tape until winter.

You know that National Geographic TV has been bought out by Fox, right?

kgb999 | Wednesday May 30, 2012 08:48 am 66

Meh. Rollins has always been an attention junkie. As such, he’s been a regular cameo dude in the wasteland of “Jackass”-type programming that seems somewhat ubiquitous on channels like MTV and VH1 these days (along with “cribs of absurdly rich twenty-somethings and tweens”). So it’s not terribly surprising to see him finally get his own deal … although NatGeo seems an odd fit.

I agree with Dr.Dick – kind of a they’ve already been-there-done-that sort of thing … but, hey, it’s probably new for the kids. I’ve never really seen him act like a polidiot when doing the shows … just the regular kind of idiot, so hopefully he sticks with that for the NatGeo thing. It would be really strange to see EVERYTHING on TV turn into politics.

And for the record, Rollins ain’t got nothin’ on Canada’s high-vice-regnant-to-the-Queen (pretty sure that’s the official title).

ImprobableJoe | Sunday June 3, 2012 03:42 pm 67

The guitarist from Slayer is Kerry KING.
