Going Purple: Millions Celebrate Spirit Day

October 20 is Spirit Day when millions go purple to show their support for LGBT youth. Founded in 2010 by teen Brittany McMillan as a response to teen and young adult suicides, Spirit Day this year has gained massive global support. GLAAD President Mike Thompson said:

From Hollywood to corporate America to local grassroots advocates, Americans are taking a stand against bullying this Spirit Day and showing all LGBT teens that it’s okay to be who you are.

Cher, Chaz Bono, Mia Farrow, Heather Graham, Gloria Allred, Lukas Haas, Audra McDonald, Ricky Martin, Joel McHale, Julianne Moore, Suze Orman, Sara Ramirez, Joan Rivers, Paulina Rubio, Tori Spelling, stars of the WWE, the cast of TeenNick’s Degrassi, Pauley D, Sammi Giancola and Vinny Guadagnino of MTV’s Jersey Shore and Farrah Abraham, Tyler Baltierra, Maci Bookout and Catelynn Lowell of Teen Mom are all going purple, along with Tyra Banks, Andy Cohen, Leah Remini, plus stars of BRAVO’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, New York, New Jersey and Orange County.
