LAUSD Headquarters overlooks the Harbor Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, and beyond it, the skycrapers of downtown. Not a very cheery spot, so I figured the protestors, led by Matt Kogan, the head of the adult section of UTLA, could use a little moral and gastronomic support (to the extent that anything from Jack in the Box can be called gastronomic). There were about half a dozen tents there; I'm guessing about 10 or so people. Not a large group, but a spirited one. The LAUSD headquarters is at 333 S. So far, the labor bureaucracy (along with assorted liberal pols and courtesans) seem to be trying to turn this all into an adjunct to Obama's re-election campaign. The LAUSD occupation would be a good step up on another rung of the ladder. It has some of the flavor of a sit-down strike. This is where any effective protest movement should be headed - sit-down strikes - and how about some nice general strikes (and not just the one-day "let off steam" variety the labor bureaucracy is fond of in Europe)? Also a bit of solidarity with some bona fide class-struggle workers' fights would seem high on the agenda - such as support for the ILWU Local 21's battle with the shipping company bosses up in Longview, Washington. Enlist the power of the working class in this Occupy X fight, and we may start to actually change some things in this country.
