Rick Perry, Porn Monger for President?

Governor Rick Perry’s presidential campaign office did not respond to repeated requests regarding his ownership of stock in Movie Gallery, a video rental company that was boycotted by American Family Association for the pornographic and violent films it sold and rented. Some of the titles included Teens with Tits Vol. 1, Teen Power Vol. 4, Teens Never Say No, Big Tit Brotha Lovers 6, Bisexual Barebacking Vol. 1 which from its title and cover appears to advocate gay and straight naked fornication and sodomy. Big Tit Brotha Lovers 6 offers:

How liberal of Rick Perry to support these things!

American Family Association, Perry’s partner in the recent Jesuspalooza fundamentalist rally in Houston, The Response, crusaded for years against Movie Gallery, urging boycotts beginning in 2000 and rejoicing in the chain’s closure.

When questioned on August 17, 2011 about AFA’s awareness of (family values campaigner, the heterosexual) Rick Perry’s stock in Movie Gallery, on Cindy Roberts in the AFA press office gasped,

Why, I had no idea!

Randy Sharp, AFA’s point person for the Movie Gallery boycott did not return our call by press time.

Rick Perry’s financial records–before he put all his publicly traded stock in a blind trust (established in 1996), making them unavailable to public scrutiny–show he invested between $5,000 to $10,000 in Movie Gallery, according to a 2006 article on Texas blog Burnt Orange, which cites Perry’s personal financial statement for 1995, the last year available.

And in June 2003 Perry signed tort reform law which Burnt Orange says benefited Movie Gallery.

Perry said the bill would “remov[e] the incentive for trial lawyers to file frivolous lawsuits.” Continuing Perry said, “we will save thousands of jobs, generate millions in new revenue to the state”

Until it went out of business in 2010, Movie Gallery , the nation’s second largest video chain, was the largest distributor of pornography in America and the only major retail chain to sell pornography in its flagship stores. The margin of profit on porn allowed the chain to undercut rental prices on mainstream videos, forcing mom-and-pops out of business. In 2003, Movie Gallery faced a $75 million federal lawsuit from an employee claiming racial discrimination. The suit also claimed Movie Gallery illegally distributed pornography across state lines. Additionally two suits

were filed on behalf of smaller competing video stores, which allege that Movie Gallery’s profits from the illegal distribution of porn across state lines allow it to lowball the prices of nonporn movies. One of the other lawsuits is a harassment action filed by former employees who say the porn created a hostile working environment.

Thomas Johnson Jr., a Movie Gallery senior vice president, said the suits were

frivolous

Sound familiar?

Obviously, as far as the Far Right is concerned, if someone like Perry does this, it’s ok because this story first came out in 2006 – five years ago. And obviously no one wanted to do anything with it then.

DonWilliams | Wednesday August 17, 2011 05:18 pm 4

Movie Gallery, Inc. was the second largest movie and game rental company in the United States, behind Blockbuster Video. The company rented and sold Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, VHS tapes, and video games.

And Perry owned some stock in that?

SHOCKING!!!!! OMG!!! WTF!!! BBQ!!!! AQMD!!!!!!

Rick Perry is GAY (video link)

Lisa Derrick | Wednesday August 17, 2011 06:48 pm 7

Don, Perry’s pal in Jesus, the American Family Association, called for a boycott of Movie Gallery in 2000. Their efforts successfully shuttered stores in Mississippi, after Movie Gallery’s low prices (funded by the porn rental and sales profit margin) drove numerous mom & pop shops out of business. Movie Gallery, faced with over-expansion, the AFA boycott, changes in video/DVD viewing patterns–including the internet–and lawsuits, filed for bankruptsy twice and is now out of business. So much for creating jobs…

Meanwhile, Perry, who claims to be family values oriented, yet profited from the sales and rental of pornography and violent films. His office refused to answer my questions about when/if Perry sold his stock in Movie Gallery.

To put it in perspective, a major Mormon stockholder in Hollywood Video, another chain, sold his shares-about 10% of of the company overall– when Hollywood was acquired by Movie Gallery because he did wish to be associated with the company, as it went against his values and standards. The link is in the story above.

I am not opposed to pornography. I do think Perry showed a certain disingenuous quality when he put his publicly traded stocks in a blind trust before running for Lt. Gov. If he sold those stocks once he learned that the company profited from something that goes against his interpretation of Christianity, that is a campaign point which shows that he honestly believes that pornography is anti-family, along with violent video games and slasher pics, and that he places his values above an investment.

Bi sexual and interracial porn? If Ron Paul’s people are still reading the lake from yesterday they need to get this story out there if they do that then Perry loses Texas and the fundy vote in all the GOP primaries!
The Corporate GOP is stuck with Mitt as their front runner and with Timmy out that leaves them Hunsman who can’t win a GOP Primary or Newt who has polling numbers that rival Sarah’s lousy numbers.
The fundies are stuck then with Michelle but I expect Mitt to fund Sarah to split the fundy vote.
Without Perry to take Texas the corporate GOP loses any shot of being co equal to the fundies and having the influence they normally have at the GOP convention.
Instead of having a candidate who is theirs they will have a fundy then Ron, a third place finisher will be the corporate GOP’s big candidate it will be hard to sell a third place finisher as VP or as deserving of writing the GOP platform like the corporate wing of the GOP normally does.
Lisa you might have just ended Perry’s dreams of being President.

I must disagree Values are every bit as important to Fundies as Ideas are to the Lake. No anti gay GOPer can vote for Perry now and being anti gay is a big issue with many GOP voters.
No racist can vote for Perry now and racism is a big issue with many GOP voters who hated Obama since day one when they thought he was Left and still hate Obama when he is now revealed as the the third term of George Bush.
Lets put it this way could any Dem get elected who was openly anti abortion rights, Gay rights and a Racist?

Hypocrisy thy name is Perry

In a video invitation, Perry says it was inspired by the Old Testament Book of Joel, with an apocalyptic passage on God’s army marching on the Israelites to punish them for their moral decline. Perry says America is facing a similar moral crisis today. In Joel, God calls on the Israelites to come together in a “sacred assembly” with “fasting, with weeping and with mourning.” Perry said Americans should do the same at the gathering at Reliant Stadium, where the 2004 Super Bowl was held.
“Given the trials that beset our nation and world, from the global economic downturn to natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and continued debasement of our culture, I believe it is time to convene the leaders from each of our United States in a day of prayer and fasting,” Perry wrote in the invitation he sent to all of the other governors in the United States, members of Congress, the Obama administration and the Texas Legislature, among others.

Unless Joel liked bi sexual porn too! Given Jesus was dark I’m sure Joel would not mind interracial sex but porn no.

David, Movie Gallery was not a “movie company” they were the nation’s largest distributor of porn. The. Nation’s. Largest. Distributor. Of. Porn. No big deal if you are are just a basic American looking to invest, whatever works for yu. But Rick Perry, running for Lt. Gov of Texas in 1998, hid his stock investments in a blind trust so his investments could not be scrutinized and ran on a family values platform, as he is now.

Had he come out and said, “Golly, fellow Texans, I looked into my stocks and discovered I mistakenly invested in porn distribution! It was making me money, but I just didn’t feel right making a buck off the backsides of people, exploiting them…” AMERICAN HERO! Principles before pay-day!

And yes, there are plenty of reasons to criticize Perry, and my fellow Firedoglake writers and the Firebaggers in comments do that and will continue to do that in, each their own style. I write the pop culture column, and religion and porn fall in there quite nicely!

Link, Stats please state some facts to back that up there is no Stock sector for porn unlike energy, financials, retail etc your assuming a fund or stock advisor made Perry’s picks. This smells like a company Perry invested in on his own a company he was familiar with, liked their product and saw was doing great business there are not enough porn companies with selling stock for even 5% of Americans to own stock in them or else Porn would likely have its own stock sector in the business pages.
Also lets assume your right a fund or financial adviser made the stock pick Perry was a politician do you really think he as Texas politician would not tell his fund or financial adviser don’t invest in companies that could hurt my political career in Texas?
An investment in Argentina Beef companies would hurt Perry politically in Texas a beef producing state, an investment in Green Power would piss off Texas oil men who fund politics in Texas. So would investing in Al Gore’s hedgefund, companies that exploit Mexican immigrants and have past scandals in that area would hurt Perry.
At best your scenario suggests that Perry a governor who runs a business (Texas) and picks people to run Texas’s pension funds is incompetent.
Your scenario is possible, unlikely but possible but you can’t escape that your scenario shows Perry is incompetent ” the buck stops here” Harry Truman said this is Newt’s 1/2 million credit at Tiffanies story on steroids to Fundy voters and last I checked all those preachers at Perry’s Prayer Meeting were anti porn.

When I want investigative reporting I go to the Austin Chronicle versus the other paper, the Austin American Spaceman.

Bonus read, “Can’t Stop the World” (by Raoul Hernandez, Aug. 19, 2011):

“There was a guy I met in Austin that worked for the Runaways, and when I moved to L.A., he was the only person I knew. He had gone from working with the Runaways to working with the Go-Go’s. When their bass player fell ill, he was the one who suggested me.”

Kathy Valentine, reclining on a red velvet Louis XV-style sofa in the basement studio of her house in West Lake Hills, nods. On the cushion next to her sits May’s 30th anniversary reissue of the Go-Go’s multiplatinum 1981 debut, Beauty and the Beat, seminally peerless SoCal power pop. Surprised but with a smile, she points herself out on the cover when asked (top left).

onitgoes | Thursday August 18, 2011 03:47 pm 62

Eh? OTOH, I really could give a sh*t about Perry’s investment in the Porn ‘n Violence movie thing. I guess one could argue (as someone seemd to be so earnestly doing up above) that it does provide citizens with jobs (well… it does) of various sorts & in various, uh, positions (you may consult the Kama Sutra on your own, thanks).

That said, it’s teh usual rightwing hypocritical double-standards on display. IOKIYAR always rules the day. I have no expectation that any conservative, fundie or otherwise, will care one whit about this. Just as long as GoodHair spouts the usual gimcrack b.s. that the T-Partiers all love to hear… what’s not to like?

It’s like that Dullard from Delaware (catchy?) who dabbled in witchcraft in her teens or whatever. I could give a stuff about that. Whatever… But we all well know that IF some putative “Democratic” candidate had been *busted* dabbling in witchcraft in their teens, then the rightwing bleating media noise machine would have been merciless… and rightwingers would’ve been up in arms shrieking: Off with her head!!!

So, yeah, my longish mulling here is just this: yet again more rightwing “Family Values” bullsh*t on display, and duly noted that some come here to post in order to, yet again, manage to wag their fingers at us DFH’s who, gasp!, have the nerve to point out the hypocritical double standard of: a) Rick Perry, specifically, in this case, and b) the so-called “Republican” or T-GOP party, and c) conservatives who turn their eyes & dutifully look the other way in the name of: IOKIYAR.

I think it’s quite appropriate to bring this up, frankly, albeit I’ll certainly grant that Perry’s so-called “policies” are of an overarching concern. But still… all’s fair, folks.

Actually, Billy, with all the great writers and hard hitting stories on FDL, FP space is a rarity for me (except for Movie Night, a special feature on Monday, and Late Night which I do once a week), as I usually cover the the fluffier side of politics and the world–actors, musicians, food, and weirdness as well as religion, and of course, Courtney Love explaining the mortgage crisis.

I have done some stories that made the front page-like the video of the Iranian girl shot by the Revolutionary Guard; the photo coverage of the Mean Prom held by anti-LGBT students in Mississipppi which drew students from the high school into the discussion (some of their comments were used in the ACLU’s case); and Bruce Springsteen’s greatest hits album being a WalMart exclusive (something the Boss publicly apologized for–given his support of unions and WalMart’s active distaste for them–when the story went large), along with some of my coverage of LGBT issues. Pretty much I’m here at La Figa tending the bounty of my labor.

Most of the time, the front page is dedicated to hard news and commentary. The front page crew felt this story was newsworthy enough to be rebooted, and I’m honored.

I can not believe the tone of most of these emails.

I can not believe what America has become with the Tea Baggers and the GOP all wanting our President to fail, and thus AMERICA TO FAIL.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO US?

WHAT HAPPENED TO BOTH PARTIES, ALONG WITH THEIR DIFFERENCES, SITTING DOWN AND NEGOTIATING TO HELP AMERICAN INSTEAD OF DESTROYING IT?

NEITHER PARTY IS GOING TO HAVE ANYTHING LEFT TO DEAL WITH ANOTHER TWO YEARS OF THIS KIND OF POLITICS. AND THE BIGGEST LOSERS WILL BE THE WEALTHY, BECAUSE THEIR WEALTH WILL MEAN NOTHING IN A COUNTRY THAT HAS 2/3 OF THEIR CITIZENS OUT OF WORK, NO PLANTS OPEN HIRING PEOPLE AND MAKING THINGS FOR PEOPLE TO BUY. BANGLADESH, HERE WE COME.

By January 2013 IT WILL BE TOO LATE.

Hypocrisy is rampant in the GOP, at least the Democrats don’t go around flaunting ‘family values’ while they are screwing the wife of their campaign chairman, ‘hiking on the Apalachian Trail in Brazil with their soulmate while the wife is at home with their 4 kids’, having an affair while their wife is sick with cancer’ (OK, there was one Republican and one Democrat who did that, but the Republican cheated on two (2) of his wives), used ‘wide stances’ in men’s restrooms to hook up with others who like the same thing, emailed teenage Congressional pages of the same sex asking if they were hard) and on and on and on. And don’t bring up the Democrat who text photos of his penis, HE COMMITTED NO CRIME AND YOU KNOW IT. AND, HE DID SOMETHING NOT ONE REPUBLICAN HAS YET TO DO, HE ADMITTED TO IT AND HE RESIGNED.

GOD FORBID A RIGHTEOUS REPUBLICAN EVER ADMIT TO ANYTHING AND RESIGN, OR ONE REPUBLICAN URGING ANOTHER TO RESIGN ‘FOR THE GOOD OF THE PARTY.’ NO IT JUST ISN’T IN THEIR VOCABULARY. GOD MADE THEM THE CHOSEN ONES………GOD………THE SAME GOD THAT HAS CREATED MILLIONS OF BLACKS, MILLIONS OF HOMOSEXUALS. HOW MANY MORE IS HE GOING TO HAVE TO CREATE UNTIL YOU REALIZE HE WANTS THEM AROUND?

So, Rick Parry (that’s Parry with an “A”, remember that when you write his name in on the ballot) was involved with a video store that sold XXX pornos. Does that mean he watched them? Probably Does that mean he never told anyone about his connection? Probably Does that mean he will now do everything he can to deny it? Probably Will the GOP do anything to him? Probably NOT!
