Late Night: Archie Comics’ Gay Character Breaks Out!

Introduced last September, Archie Comics’ first openly gay character, Kevin Keller, has made the big time: He’s getting his own series!

Kevin’s story arc began in the Archie spin-off Veronica when the cute Ken doll-esque teen showed up in Riverdale and wealthy boy-crazy brunette Veronica promptly crushed madly on him. A press release issued at Kevin’s launch said:

The introduction of Kevin as an openly gay character is part of the commitment to keep Archie properties reflective of the current world of teens and teen media.

Kevin’s series, which will start in February 2012, titled Kevin Keller, will bring in the teen’s military dad who is proud of his son and supports his decision to join the Armed Forces. Kevin will also run for class president.  And win! But Kevin will have to face a few challenges as writer-artist Dan Parent keeps Riverdale High real:

Even the most popular kids are not popular with everybody. There’s some adversity he’ll have to deal with.

Kevin’s appearance hasn’t prompted much outrage. Only seven subscriptions to Archie Comics have been canceled since Kevin joined the gang. Says Jon Goldwater, co-chief executive of Archie Comics:

We’re just so proud of the success of Kevin and the fact that he adds a new dynamic to Riverdale.

Yeah, and Kevin did the impossible. He beat Jughead in a burger eating contest!

Sugar sugar!

Lisa!

Archie going gay, now that is something I would never have expected. Edgy and hip was never part of the series when I ws growing up, but perhaps this simply shows how mainstream and unremarkable gay is today.

I would like to believe that gay had become mainstream and unremarkable…

And that’s kinda good….

Sharkbabe | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:10 pm 7

I enjoyed the hell out of Archie Comix as a kid – but gah, the relentless boring endless heterosexuality .. this is simply awesome

move2baru | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:10 pm 8

I guess this proves it. Gays are neither born that way or raised that way. They are just drawn to the same sex.

slukegreen | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:11 pm 9

The reason it hasn’t attracted much attention is that no one has read Archie in about 30 years. Seriouly who even knew it was still around?

DrDick | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:12 pm 10
In response to EvilDrPuma @ 5

I think it really is to a large extent, though not everywhere and not among all demographic groups (less so in rural areas and among social conservatives). A majority of Americans (admittedly only a small majority) support same sex marriage in this country today, something I would not have believed even five years ago.

Actually, that is a whole lot good, though rather surprising to old farts like me who still remember the pre-Stonewall world.

I loved to read Archie Comics and Pep even before I learned to read. Nancy, Fritzi Ritz, and Ferd’nand in the papers too. If I have regrets, it’s that I grew up.

Actually there is no pain to speak of. It’s a bit tender of course but really it’s a relief. I’ve been living with this pain for a long time. I couldn’t afford the $321 but I couldn’t leave it to rot out of my skull either. Wish I could have saved it though.

It is always a good idea to get those things taken care of. Without treatment, if it gets abscessed it can spread to the brain and kill you (lots of folks died of dental abscesses before antibiotics).

In response to AitchD @ 21

I was a Richie Rich fan but Archie was okay too.

AitchD | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:37 pm 25

Only seven subscriptions to Archie Comics have been canceled since Kevin joined the gang.

Probably due to the ‘recession’/depression. Probably a few hundred who would’ve canceled renewed instead.

I’m aware, yep. I’ve managed to keep infection at bay through a combination of keeping my immune system strong and keeping the tooth clean but the pain of the exposed nerve was just too much in the end. I wish I could have held out until my insurance becomes effective in August but ’twas not to be. I’ll get a bridge or an implant later.

Margaret | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:39 pm 27

I was able to brush my teeth again this evening finally, though very lightly. I haven’t been able to properly brush in months.

Well, you’re very young. (I never heard of Richie Rich. And you didn’t read the Mad Magazine spoof of Archie when it was first published.)

Heh. I was joking around with a couple of friends today about being a mere youngster, as one of them just turned 62 and the other is 60. I still have six months before I turn 60!

I had a funny experience in the exercise room the other day. I was riding the recumbant and a guy came in and asked how much longer I’d be. I looked at the timer and told him about 16 minutes left, (out of 45), and he sort of wandered for a bit, doing this and that. A few minutes later he came back and told me he was kind of in a hurry and he really needed to work out. Then he said that I should allow him on because he was older and needed it more. I asked him how old he was and he told me 49. I started laughing and said “I guess you do need it more. I’m 51″. I don’t think he believed me. Either way, I made him wait. He should have planned better.

Margaret | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:52 pm 34

You don’t look that old. Certainly not over 65!

DrDick | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:52 pm 35

LOL! Folks like that guy always irritate me with their attitude that their time is more important or valuable than anyone else’s.

Remember the Jack Benny & Marilyn Monroe bit? (I know, who’s Jack Benny.) Well, he asks her to marry him, and Marilyn mentions the age difference, she being 25, and he goes, “So?” and Marilyn says, “But Jack, when I’m 60 you’ll be 39″.

DrDick | Tuesday July 19, 2011 08:57 pm 37

Time for me to toddle off. Have young minds to corrupt in the morning. Take care all.

My favorite MM story is about when she and newlywed Joe DiMaggio were in Korea entertaining the troops, and after her singing she tells Joe backstage, Oh, Joe, the applause, the applause! You just can’t imagine such applause, and Joe goes, Yes, I can.

It’s French LN again, n’est-ce pas? You reminded me of Keats’s letter to his brother George who wondered why John had altered the original three kisses in the Rymer ballade, to closing the woman’s eyes in La Belle Dame sans Merci “with kisses four’, and John answered that with three kisses she’d have an odd number of eyes.

OUTRAGEOUS-  Vermont inn bans paying customers from celebrating marriage because they are gay. Please, everyone direct your complaints towards info@wildflowerinn.com.Trust me,I grew up in VT a long time ago,the only people here who would ever do something like this are bigots. Even the Christian churches here in VT marry gays. I have never heard of such disgusting behavior perpetrated by a VT citizen on a paying customer no less. VT is one of the most liberal states in the Union,i can’t believe we will be known by the Wildflower inn’s owner’s hateful behavior. Today I’m ashamed to be an old time VTer. The website is here as well: http://bit.ly/qILPzr
