Late Night: Obama Gets Twisted?

Wow, was the orchestra supposed to be a soundtrack for Obama’s toast, or are they playing him off like an overextended Oscar speech?

How do you feel about government reaction/response to the tornadoes? Fox had a few nasty things to say. Note that Pat Robertson didn’t say the Joplin tornado was God’s wrath, unlike his comment about the earthquake that devastated Haiti. Maybe he’s learned something?

Obama will be in Tornado Alley on Sunday.

And we have one more Friend of FDL gift membership to give away to someone who would like to join but is fiscally hampered, courtesy of FDL contributor/Late Night participant eCAHN. Zap me an email give.a.fig.la.figa@gmail.com. First come, first gifted.

{ LOL } Hearing an American president give that forced speech to a figurehead is so bizarre to me. Now this, on the other hand, was genuine and funny.

Pat Robertson can’t make any “wrath of Gawd” comments. That would hit him in the pocketbook. Too many white protestants in Joplin.

There will be some Godly Miracles reported soon. When certain individuals are found whose lives were miraculously spared.

CitiZen Lisa Derrik:

Yo Sister Lisa, how’s trix on the left coast? I only stopped in ‘cuz about a year or so ago you dropped a link to a real fine eclectic, “alternative” music station in LA and I had it on my favorites on my old computer and then it got wiped clean in one of the many power surge purges we used ta have around here. Could you please turn me on to that streamin’ site again, dear heart, I’m gettin real tired of havin ta hop around because of the monomaniacal music on the sites I usually link to?

Thanx, you gotta bring your musical pards out here to the 10th Senate District in June or July…things are gettin really interestin’ here in the heartland of democracy and anus of progress. Think you might even bring some fresh inspiration back with ya to the city of fallen angles.

Apple’s iTunes is free, has a ‘radio’ feature that streams every sort of stuff (by category, by drop-down menu), some streams at 192 bps, which is very close to being good enough.

I love lilacs!

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday May 24, 2011 09:40 pm 48

In modern Ireland, lilacs are now grown and displayed proudly in homes. However for a very long time they were viewed as “unlucky,” because they are symbols of the Virgin Mary, and if you had them in your home, you could be seen by the English/occupiers as supporting Catholicism and a rebellious intent. And those things could make you VERY unlucky with British troops.

NorskeFlamethrower | Tuesday May 24, 2011 09:43 pm 49

Citizen Lisa Derrick:

I love ‘em too but mostly because they last just the right length of time so’s ya don’t end up with asthma or snot clots on the brain. And ya better love ‘em because you’ll never get rid of ‘em once they have taken a liking to yer territory…ya need tactical nukes ta get rid of them. Now…I swear it’s off to bed.

Well, you can’t blame a girl for trying.

Gibbo | Wednesday May 25, 2011 02:32 am 57

What a moronic post, Lisa. The orchestra is playing “God Save the Queen” (UK national anthem), precisely timed (by the event producers/bandleader, no doubt) to segue through the climax of the Prez’s toast into the upstanding and glass-raising of those present.

IMHO as a long-experienced event creator/producer.

Honestly, Obama-bashing for any pathetic/puerile/stretched reason at all, on this site, resembles 2010 “No Quarter”/”Puma” behavior. But, we’re al adults here, right? Faithfully tuning in to ancient, corny children’s cartoons as a weekly attraction?

skepticdog | Wednesday May 25, 2011 04:37 am 58

I find it impossible to trust any country that still has a queen. They must truly be dysfunctional people. Maybe that’s why democracies don’t work.

bonncaruso | Wednesday May 25, 2011 09:01 am 59

The british national hymn (“God save the Queen”) is always played at state functions and especially for toasts to the Queen. I have seen this a number of times. It is common.

Lisa Derrick | Thursday May 26, 2011 11:17 am 60
In response to Gibbo @ 57

I wasn’t using it as Obama-bashing by a long shot.

Actually CBS and others have noted this mis-timing. “God Save the Queen” is not to be spoken over, but then the orchestra prolly didn’t anticipate (not could any event planner, however seasoned) POTUS’ pause, which the orchestra leader might have seen as “cue the band.”

BET explains it well

Later that night during the state dinner at Buckingham Palace, Obama began his toast to Elizabeth II and the orchestra accidentally began playing Britain’s national anthem “God Save the Queen.” Instead of pausing until the music stopped, the president pressed on, only to be ignored by the queen when he turned and raised his glass to her. According to protocol, everyone must stand still while the anthem is played as everyone did except poor Obama. Talk about an awkward moment.

The queen just looked straight ahead and one could virtually feel his cheeks burning as he put his glass back down before saluting her again once the music had ended. Given the “genuine warmth” that a palace spokesman said exists between the royals and Obama, couldn’t she have done him a solid and bent the rule?

Lisa Derrick | Thursday May 26, 2011 05:40 pm 61
In response to Gibbo @ 57

And from the BBC:

Barack Obama was probably not aware that he was doing anything unusual when making a toast “to the Queen” and then continuing with a short speech. According to protocol, however, he should have stopped after the toast.

The band, taking its cue from the word Queen, struck up with the national anthem leaving the president struggling to make himself heard.
