Oscar Red Carpet: Live Blog and Warm Up

Welcome to the Firedoglake Red Carpet Liveblog, a chance to get our snark and cheer lubricated for the main event, the Academy Awards, which starts in an hour on whatever your ABC affiliate might be.

Every year for over decade, my friend Mary Herczog and her husband Steve Hochman hosted a great Oscar party–a tradition that continued even after her death last year. It was pot luck, with the food  themed around the nominees. The easy out was the Best Foreign Film category: You could just bring, say, Chinese or French food or whatever  snacks from the nominated countries that year.

One of last year's nominated noms

This year, we her friends, are spreading the tradition of Nominated Noms to other parties we attend, which is why I’m sharing it with you. The most obvious of course is True Grit with its numerous  chances to win–and any number of ways to make grits (I like them plain with butter, or dolled up with sharp cheddar cheese, bacon and jalapenos). But there is the so-called Forrest Gump rule; that year so many shrimp dishes and boxes of chocolate showed up it was hard to make a balanced meal. So if you’re bringing the obvious, bring another dish to balance it out!

The Crush, nominated for Best Short Film (Live Action) allows for a number of things for the table, from Orange Crush soda, to a crushed pineapple dessert.  Best Actor nominee and host James Franco (which seems a bit double-dippy, don’t you think–hosting and being nominated, though he is easy on the eyes!) could provoke a plate of franks, or for his role his role in 27 Days a tasty–though possibly tasteless–bone-in leg of lamb. You get the idea: Puns, references and even the obvious are welcome for the sharing.

So while we watch the arrivals and dish on them, let’s also plan the virtual menu during commercials to whet our appetite for the main course: The 83rd annual Academy Awards.

Go girl!

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:10 pm 6

How much better would the Red Carpet coverage be without Ryan Seacrest, someone who (Luke Russert, of all people, reminds us on Twitter) is worth half a billion dollars.

Missed the question mark there, your comments welcome:

“?”

eCAHNomics | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:12 pm 8

As I have seen no movies in the past year, is there a link to the trailers for all the nominees?

solai | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:12 pm 9

Thanks Lisa, love live-blogging. Can we keep tabs on WI at the same time?

That sounds like a parody scene of Kathy Griffin and Julianne Moore in the “Black Swan” dream sequence….

I only saw The Social Network but am truly looking forward to The King’s Speech.

Scarecrow | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:14 pm 13

Roger Ebert just tweeted that some actress’s orange dress matched the parking lot cones. Man has a sharp eye for fashion.

Russel Brand with his mom–so sweet, so as not to be overhsadowed by wife katy Perry?

Here’s what Luke twittered (it was 1/4 not 1/2):

Every time I see Ryan Seacrest on TV I say to people “that man is worth more than a quarter of a billion dollars.” nobody believes me.

Here’s what I replied to Luke:

@RussertXM_NBC Every time I see Luke Russert on TV I say to people “that man got his job because his dad died.” nobody believes me.

What is the King’s Speech.

Actually I forgot that I did see the Valerie Plame movie. Truly awful rendition.

Scarecrow | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:17 pm 22

Via Netflix, just watched Cary Grant and Kate Hepburn in “Holiday.” Wonderful. Mainstreet guy engaged to MOTU’s daughter (not Kate), but has to choose between making money and following his dreams, as urged on by daughter’s sister (Kate). There’s a no brainer. Perfect story for this era.

I feel that way about lot movies!

Elliott | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:22 pm 27

catty I know, but I don’t think Robin belongs on the red carpet

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:23 pm 28

Helena Bonham Carter, obviously totally DONE with the red-carpet criticism from people who know NOTHING about fashion, told Ryan Seacrest she got a COSTUME designer to do her dress tonight. I mean, she wore a Vivienne Westwood (a designer who revolutionized fashion and had a recent traveling museum exhibition of her work) and Seacrest, Osbourne and Rancic (along with noted fashion icon JOAN RIVERS!) acted like she dressed out of the dumpster.

Good for her for getting a COSTUME designer this time. Shorter: “You’ve mocked real designers whose stuff I’ve worn, so I’m mocking you.”

In response to Elliott @ 24

Nope. Only one Kathryn Hepburn. Dazzling in every scene. so then I watched Grant and Grace Kelly in “To Catch a Thief.” Gorgeous, . . . “touch them; you know you want to hold them” . . . but still can’t match Hepburn’s effect on the screen.

I bring it, yes.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:26 pm 31

Story of Prince Albert who wants to speak to the people of England during WWII. Problem is, he stutters. This is the story of him trying to overcome the impediment so he can reassure the British citizens.
I saw photos once of him and his wife (the Queen Mum) visiting all the bombed neighborhoods during the Blitz. I think I’ll like the movie.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:28 pm 33

Kate Blanchette is always so amazing-remember that green Dior she worw with all the embrodery.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:28 pm 34

Irony alert: per the execrable Giulianna Rancic, having expanded the list to TEN films last year, the Academy has removed the montages about the nominated movies this year, in order to shorten the telecast.

In other words, you don’t get to see ANY part of the movies on offer.

solai | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:30 pm 35

Nicole’s dress is odd.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:33 pm 38

I DO Love Tim Gunn

solai | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:34 pm 39

Uh oh, I’m getting old. I keep looking at these actors and trying to place them. My father used to do that when I was a kid…”How do I know him?”….and I’d tell him which movie the actor was in. Now, I’m asking but Mr. Solai doesn’t know either. Uh Oh.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:34 pm 40

One of my guests, art expert/collector Marilyn Nix just asked if anyone would be making pro-union speeches..a worthwhile query!

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:38 pm 41

Bad hair Scarlett!

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:39 pm 42

She is so gorgeous, but that dress was a tad matronly, and the TRAIN–ugh. Fail

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:40 pm 43

I am not thirlled by this ABC coverage

solai | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:41 pm 44
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 40

I’m counting on it. I can’t believe how little coverage they’re getting.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:42 pm 45

How funny was it, watching Ryan Seacrest (supposedly NOT a gay) interview Adam Shankman (OPENLY gay) about whether Tom Cruise (litigiously NOT a gay) can sing in the new movie Adam’s working on.

Heh.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:43 pm 46

Is Warren a little addled? It’s cute.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:46 pm 47
In response to Teddy Partridge @ 45

Tom Cruise CAN’T be gay! He’s a memebr of a “church” I can’t mention. And they don’t allow any of their members to be gay. They fix them with the TopSekrit stuff

solai | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:48 pm 48

OT..It’s being tweeted that one of the Repub Senators will NOT be voting for Gov. Walker’s bill. It was announced to the protestors who then broke out in cheers. Two to go.

I make up for my rapidly failing visual recognition skilz by pegging all the actors and actresses in voice-over ad work!

And that unmentionable cult’s leadership doesn’t beat or abuse its staff or use their work on land, sea and air without compensation. As with Steven Seagal’s contributions to another religion, when you pay enough, you can dictate quiet exceptions to policy, whatever they may be.

Elliott | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:55 pm 54

I like Downey

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:56 pm 55

ROBERT DOWNEY JR! Be still by beating heart. ANd the cool thing–he wants to star in a movie version of the latest Pyncheon novel

Alex Gordon | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:57 pm 56

Robert Downey Jr can be cast in anything.

solai | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:57 pm 57

I have a confession. I love watching Ryan Seacrest. He’s such a trouble-making ass that he make’s me laugh.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 27, 2011 04:58 pm 58
