Late Night: Votin’ and Sippin’ and Tokin’

I voted! Very excited! Now I am watching the exit polls. I figure we’re gonna just shoot the breeze about whatever tonight.  Straw polls, strawmen and women, weed…it’s a free for all. I’ll be happy to swap recipes, tell jokes, and cheer as election results come in. We can play a drinking game: every time a talking head says

“Exit”

or

“Lead”

or

“Gaining”

or

“Defeat”

or

“Trailing”.

swig iced tea or American liquor! And anytime marijuana is mentioned, well, do what thou wilt!

There is a small town just south of Chicago (pop. 2,033) named Beecher. I have a friend that is an occupational safety consultant who passes through the town regularly. He told me there are two businesses, Beecher Tool & Die and Beecher Meat and Liquor.

Anyway, for years I haven’t been able to hear the word liquor without being reminded. Sorry for the inane diversion, back to your regularly scheduled program.

demi | Tuesday November 2, 2010 08:31 pm 20

Ciro Rodriguez was just on local news, telling supporters it ain’t over yet – true all results not in. Missed the lead-in but suspect that means results in show teabagger Cansecoo leading. Hope he doesn’t win…constituents will be sorry they bought the lies. Canseco also taking the playbook – stay out of sight, don’t answer any quesitons, don’t even let your campaing schedule become public, but do take millions in out of state money (can you say, “Crossroads”/Dick Armey?) and blanket the airwaves with nasty, slanderous lying ads showing Ciro looking dour and mean. All weekend it seemed every ad space on tv was full of Canseco ads. disgusting.

It’s harder than hell to condense a book enough for a screen adaptation, so if you read the book first you’ll usually be disappointed by the film. If you see the film first it likely will spoil some of the surprises in the book…

There are two examples of novels I would have thought impossible to adapt which received remarkably good film treatments. Catch-22 and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (except I wish Gilliam had left the Gary Busey improv on the cutting room floor). I consider the film Catch-22 something of a masterpiece. Worth watching with the commentary on is you ever happen to see the DVD.

Perry has won in Texas and plans to be leaving on his 2012 election bid, excuse me, book tour tomorrow. Just what we need.

The Texas House looks to be a slaughter for Dems. It was slightly Republican. And we have the VERY UGLY SPECTER of redistricting with a population increase to be done by a heavy Republican majority.

That is all the bad news from Texas I care to report.

There’s an epidemic of eye clawing that seems to be spreading.

I’ve been drinking with fellow precinct Dems but the news is still seeping in.

BargainCountertenor | Tuesday November 2, 2010 08:43 pm 38

BargainCountertenor | Tuesday November 2, 2010 08:47 pm 41

Boner-head is choked up, because “I’ve spent my whole life chasing the American Dream… I put myself through school working every rotten job there was. I put my heart and soul into running a small business. And when I saw how out of touch Washington had become with our nation’s core values, I put my name up for office.”

What a useless waste of oxygen.

Ick, I keep forgetting about redistricting. As if we don’t have weird enough districts (see, 23rd, Ciro Rodriguez’s – 800 mi long) left from the last mid-decade reapportionment.

Public funding may be the only thing that can save us, Lisa.

What I’d do is funnel all punitive damages in civil lawsuits (allowing the plaintiff’s lawyers a 10% cut) into a public campaign fund. Punitive damages are punishment. Society should benefit from those funds rather than allowing plaintiffs to win a lawsuit lottery.

Appreciated. Just found it on my road atlas, about 10mi due east of Peotone ([Looking about] Where?), which before its notoriety as the site of Chicago’s perennial political football 3rd airport was my standard for Illinois cornfield obscurity. In fact come to think, I probably came through there last year on a return trip up IL-1, and didn’t notice a thing.

Write a better initiative and run it again. Don’t commercialize it. Legalize home-grows and possession under 500g? 250g? Something consistent with personal use and inconsistent with commercial level sales.

Don’t confront the Federal Government. There are treaty matters that would force their hand.

Another Colorado view, while waiting for the Senate result:

- 2 of the 7 house seats will flip FROM incumbent dems TO republicans
*Degette & Polis win by BIG margins, Perlmutter by about 9%
- Governor stays in Dem hands by BIG margin
- CA style anti-tax props FAIL
- Personhood FAILS (again) by HGE margin 71% – 29%

There is no TeaParty effectiveness in Colorado. #Dankseigottimhimmel
