Stephen Colbert to Testify Before Congress, Fox News Furious

Arch pundit Stephen Colbert is scheduled to appear before the House Judiciary Committee’s immigration subcommittee on Friday September24 to discuss his experience picking fruit as part of the United Farm Workers Take Our Jobs program,  which invites U.S. citizens and legal residents to replace tens of thousands of immigrant field laborers, most of whom are undocumented.

Appearing on the Colbert Report in July, United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez said that only three people have participated. Colbert’s participation increased the number to of participants to four.

The Daily Caller quotes a Republican source who claims the pseudo-conservative blowhard will appear in character before the committee. Fox and Friends Gretchen Carlson is really upset. She railed that it was a waste of tax payer dollars and an outrage that Colbert would appear in character under oath.

Batting her tarantula-like black lashes, the former Miss America and Stanford graduate said that there are better qualified people to testify and if Colbert insults Congress and wastes taxpayers money, his appearance will be discussed all weekend on Fox.

So Fox needs Colbert to help them build ratings? Or is it that Gretchen Carlson needs Colbert to help her build ratings?

Better that than the unilateral Democratic capitulation on taxes. That is if you care about the Democrats’ chances in November. I’ve decided. I’m going to vote for Bill White and call it a day.

Ann in AZ | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:43 pm 3

Great post, Lisa! My opinion is that Rethugs never will get over Colbert’s performance at the WH Correspondence Dinner in 2006. But Steven is too good. I can’t wait to see what he will say to congress, in or out of his character.

yellowsnapdragon | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:46 pm 4

I can’t believe that this will actually happen. But man oh man I hope it does.

RepackRider | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:48 pm 5

Brilliant. If they don’t like it, they can use their bully pulpit to promote his show for him. They might have to address the origin of his “character.” Bummer.

demi | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:50 pm 6

Dude! I must be having a flash back, ’cause I think I already read this post. Oh, yeah. Facebook.
Thanks, Lisa. I’m with whoever said, earlier, anything that pisses Fox off works for me.
I happen to think Stephen’s Fine. Very smart, compassionate, not to mention having found a clever way to make his point. Not bad for a Catholic!

zvikes | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:52 pm 7

I’ll go ahead and say it – in this one case Fox is right. There is no reason to have someone playing a character testify. It would be like bringing in “Michael Scott” to talk about problems the paper companies are facing. This is pointless and stupid, and if there was an equivalent character making fun of the left that was brought to testify for Congress in everyone where would complain about it and talk about how broken Congress is for something like this to happen.

Prairie Sunshine | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:53 pm 8

In the spirit, mode of Gretchen, Glenn and all the other ghouls at that het-upwork:

FOX RPM

now does that mean Republican propaganda merchants?
Rightwing publicity machine?
Rupert’s poopy media?

We despise, you re-roger.

Way to go, Stephen Colbert.

Kathryn in MA | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:53 pm 9

oooooooooooooh, they’ll talk about it all weekend? What ever will they say?

stevo67 | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:55 pm 10
In response to zvikes @ 7

Everything this Congress has done has been nothing but low comedy poorly executed; at least Colbert will show them how to do it right.

Beerfart Liberal | Thursday September 23, 2010 05:59 pm 11

“We’[ll talk about it all weekend right here.” Ooooooo. I’m scared, Miss Shit-for-Brains. (Actually, not. Stanford grad. Smart. I think SHE’S in character every show, too. Nobody is that dense.)

May I quote you?
pointless and stupid
I doubt the Character will show up. R U drinking?

DeadLast | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:01 pm 13

Glen Beck is the only pundit who should get to testify!

bgrothus | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:01 pm 14

Please, can someone explain how it matters if it was Stephen Colbert or his character who was picking in the fields?

If David Vitter would take up the challenge, I would not care if he wore diapers. Or not.

Same for any of ‘em.

bgrothus | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:04 pm 15

And PS. If David Vitter wanted to testify in front of Congress in or out of his diapers, whether he wore them picking or not, I would not care as long as he told the truth. Oh wait.

Also.

demi | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:07 pm 16

Is the host here? I feel less inclinded to participate in that case. FDL? What up?

demi | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:09 pm 17

Oh, I see the time. Know it, learn it.

nonquixote | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:09 pm 18

As young children, 6-11 yrs-old, we were hired, 10 cents a pail to hand-pick cherries in the local orchards to supplement the immigrant work-force families that traveled north each summer. Going to have to visit someone with cable to see this.

Remember having that money for the county fair and my new shoes for school that fall.

bgrothus | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:11 pm 19

And one more thing, I bet a lot of regular American citizens who wish they had a job would have joined up on this challenge if they knew they could testify in front of Congress.

I am so sure.

TheOracle | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:19 pm 20

I just hope the excellent Stephen Colbert testifies in his Spanish character, with his hair slicked back, gum-chewing, with his chicas to either side.

Hey, the Republicans and Faux News nuts are going to go bat-crap insane anyway (as if they aren’t already), so go all the way. It’s not like Democratic Party chairs are going to be questioning under oath George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, as well as all the other crazed neo-con Republicans, who committed so many crimes and caused so much damage to our country over eight long torturous years.

Sharkbabe | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:20 pm 21

I’m tired of Colbert. Stewart too for that matter. I’m tired of stunts no matter how clever. I’m tired of smart liberal entertainers who get rich making me laugh and feel smart, and take home their paychecks from Viacom or whoever. I’m sick of all the stupid bullshit.

I’ll always be in awe of Steven for how he eviscerated GW Bush in person at that press dinner bullshit. But that’s the one time he really decided to be himself and bring it.

Yes!!! Estephan Colberto!!!

underemployedlovinit | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:28 pm 23

Yes that is COOL! I would like to see all university grads be required to work in the fields for two weeks during the summer before a degree is issued. No subjects excluded! and who’s Glen Beck?

Please don’t hate too much on Colbert and Stewart. Both these guys could be making far, far, far more money on broadcast TV, but with a much tighter leash.

Viacom is bad, but they don’t muzzle these guys as much as Stewart self-censors himself (because he once believed in Obama, after the Tim Kaine interview, now not so much) …and Colbert is so out there half the time Repubs think he’s one of them (I honestly don’t think the network suits at Viacom get Colbert at all).

The fact of the matter is these guys are giving us a far truer (or thuthier) version of the day’s events than what we’ve had from the corporate media for several years. Since Bill Moyers retired from PBS they are the only guys on TV I trust to tell me what’s going on.

Beerfart Liberal | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:39 pm 27

wonder what the repubs on the committee will do?

nonquixote | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:39 pm 28

Wasn’t until decades later that I discovered the dried dew and blackened fruit juice covering every square inch of skin up to our armpits was a concentrated plaster of the DDT and arsenic based pesticides in heavy use in those days.

Another thing that would be compelling for participation in the “take our jobs back from illegal immigrants” program.

Pannochka | Thursday September 23, 2010 06:58 pm 30

Oh noes!!!!!

Discussed on FOX news? However will Colbert survive such an onslaught?!?!?

Right on Edited by Mod, I’m with you. What if the White House had a male prostitute (who was at the White House more than a few times) pose as a reporter that they could have lob soft ball questions to the President, then you’d be all up in arms wouldn’t you? Oh wait…
Let me give a different hypothetical question ok?
Nevermind

tsuki | Thursday September 23, 2010 07:28 pm 33

Fox had better watch out. I know quite a few conservative teabaggers that think Colbert is a Right Wing Pundit.

We have a faker posing as the epitome of hope and change playing the president, why not a faux rethug? Could his appearance be any more of a slap in the face to congress than those of Goodling, Gonzalez, or the lies told by Roberts and Alito to get confirmed?

What’s worse?

onitgoes | Thursday September 23, 2010 08:22 pm 36

This sounds good to me. Colbert’s actually a pretty serious guy beneath his “character,” and he’ll probably have something worthwhile to say and present it in language that even the congress can understand (not that I expect Congress to actually do anything useful afterwards). What the heck.

If Fake wishes to babble about it all weekend, so much the better.

workingclass | Thursday September 23, 2010 08:30 pm 37

Hilarious. I wish Colbert was our Emperor.

thinkfirstthenvote | Thursday September 23, 2010 11:00 pm 38

Maybe Gretchen and Steve can show get their own lily-white hands dirty and head out there to work. Wouldn’t that be a hoot!

I still enjoy love The Daily Show, but I have to agree with Sharkbabe that the spectacle of the two sides teasing and mocking each other while the country goes to hell has become disheartening. Guess who’s still in charge after all the laughter dies down? Hint: Ike warned us about it, and it’s a huge national industry.

No, I don’t mean growing marijuana.
