Crossdressing Teen Allowed to Wear Dress to Prom

Cape May, NJ senior and aspiring fashion designer Derrek Lutz wanted to wear a dress to prom to express his inner self.  He told the local CBS affiliate:

Yea, I’m a cross dresser.

and describes himself on his MySpace page as

a drag princess who loves loves makeup and music.

But his school’s principal said no to the dress on Thursday, with the prom scheduled for tonight, May 1. Derrek decided he and his female date would still go to the prom and have a good time, no matter what, not to protest but because it’s well, prom. Derrek explained:

What makes me a woman is inside and it doesn’t really matter what’s on the outside. And everyone should really just be treated equally.

However Derrek’s classmates took up his cause and created a Facebook page Let Derrek Lutz Wear A Dress To Prom which made the point

girls are allowed to wear tuxedos so why can’t a boy wear a dress?

and started a petition which got hundreds of signatures. Those actions caused the school district to take notice, and the matter of Derrek’s prom dress was

taken to other parties in the district and the issue was resolved

according to his school’s principal. “Resolved” as in Derrek will be wearing his knee length dress and high heels.  Yay!

I hope nudists will be allowed to go naked.

This isn’t about your stuffy, narrow definition of formal wear, Lisa. It’s about expressing your inner self.
