Gang and LAPD Members Target Sexually Active Men in Los Angeles Parks

sexy view from Elysian Park

The Los Angeles Police Department held a news conference Friday about their vice arrests in Los Angeles area parks, which was covered in part by our local CBS channel; it’s not up on the CBS website right now, though the Daily Breeze did cover the news conference.

The LAPD is cracking down men having sex in local outdoors areas–in 2009 the LAPD arrested 90 men for lewd behavior in local parks, including Griffith Park, Elysian Park and Sycamore Grove, up from 75 in 2008–and the lead vice officer, who is openly gay, said that it wasn’t an issue of gay, straight or bi, but that public sex is illegal. Families and other park users are complaining.  But here’s where it gets weird.

The police said that gang members were targeting men cruising for sex and robbing them at knife point because the victims were unlikely to come forth and file charges. Okay, so then how do the police know there robberies are occurring? And frankly, shouldn’t the LAPD be looking for armed robbers rather than guys trying to get some action?

Then after showing video of park areas littered with condoms, the police said that there was a risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Not if you are using condoms! And sexually transmitted diseases can get passed around in one’s home just as easily as in a park if you don’t use condoms. Granted used condoms are yucky and don’t biodegrade. Maybe there should be more trashcans available so that used condoms can be disposed of properly, because littering isn’t very nice and we should be tidy.

BTW, according to the police statement:

Many participants have been arrested frequently for the same activity and claim to be married and heterosexual.

Side note: Elysian Park is home to the Los Angeles Police Academy, making it a rather high risk area for both public sex and armed robbery…

When I was in HIV prevention, the federal park police let us put up mailboxes with condoms in them in the cruisy Golden Gate Park beach areas by the windmills. Then the soccer fields got expanded and families started complaining. So we stopped putting out condoms, but of course the sex didn’t stop. Go figure.

But trash cans are also a good idea.

Of course there’s a risk of sexually transmitted disease! What the hell do you think is IN those condoms, sugar syrup? Twit!

In a park with families, guys are having public sex. Somehow, the solution is to put in more trashcans so they can nicely throw away their condoms?

Huh???

Lisa, First off, the cops haven’t “targeted” MEN having sex in public at these parks. That’s not reported anywhere. They are cracking down on people having sex in public at these parks. If these parks are a usual meeting place for guys and girls to hook up, then both sexes would probably be arrested and that would have been stated. But since these parks are usual meeting places for MEN to hook up with other men, regardless if they identify as gay or straight, they are more often the ones getting arrested. That stands to reason.

Second, as to the fact that cowardly criminals many times target EASY victims, that are more unlikely to report a robbery, like say, someone who is already breaking the law and doesn’t want to be embarrassed by telling the police what they were doing when the robbery happened. The police didn’t say that these victims NEVER report these violent felonies, only that they are only “LESS LIKELY TO COME FORTH AND FILE CHARGES” If no one files charges for the police to prosecute bad guys, that also doesn’t mean that the police don’t know that these robberies are taking place. They come out, talk to the victim and when the victim should sign a police report and later testify, they back off and are just glad they are safe and only missing some money. Their wives, husbands, boyfriends (whatever) never learn that they were robbed while cruising the local park.

Frankly the police are probably looking for robbers, probably not the first priority of the VICE unit though. They probably leave the gangmembers stealing from park goers to the GANG unit….. Really a tough one I know…..undercover officers doing an undercover assignment Vs uniformed GANG officers looking for GANGMEMBERS. I bet if the Vice Guys saw a robbery taking place, they would love to arrest the gangmember. I think they would be able to tell that one guy was robbing the other guy since they usually see guys giving other guys BJ’s.

AND LASTLY……..I saw a LOT of condoms. and wrappers, and napkins. and the videos I researched stated that there were condoms, wrappers, paper towels with blood and feces on them. And this was in many areas of the parks. The presence of condoms does indicate some level on safer sex, but the paper towels with blood and feces on them may have been used to clean up from UNPROTECTED SEX before returning the the office or home. What kind of trash would you expect from the hundreds of people having UNPROTECTED SEX????? And you know that unprotected sex is a huge problem in ALL PEOPLE. What would lead you to think otherwise.

Please be more responsible and more insightful when writing a piece that your name is attached to.

People are going to have sex; some have it parks out of societal censure, historical precedent, necessity, or preference. They should be encouraged to have safe sex with condoms and with sharps containers to safely dispose of used rubbers, towels etc.

The first priority should be clearing the robbers out of the area. What’s to prevent them from preying on families once the sexually active are gone?

I didn’t say victims would NEVER come forth; I wrote they were “unlikely” to do–and that is one of many unfortunate side effects of how homosexuality is viewed by the Establishment.

Don, I am wondering why you are not concerned about the armed robberies in the park.

Lisa, no one is defending the robberies. What’s there to discuss? Round up the perps and throw them in prison. Anyone disagree? No, I didn’t think so.

Now, people are going to defecate. How would you like it if a bunch of people did it in front of your house on a daily basis? Would you put a roll of toilet paper in the yard for them and call it a day?

No one should be having sex in a public park. Period. When lots of people are doing it, you’ve got a huge problem.
