Right On Sister: Anne Hathaway Quit Catholic Church for Gay Brother

Actress Anne Hathaway told GQ Magazine she left the Catholic Church, asking rhetorically

Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?

The actress–who is active in LGBT rights–explains that when her brother Thomas came out, the whole family moved their faith to Episcopalianism, but now she admits she’s

Nothing. Fuck it, I’m a work in progress.

As of June 2009 the Episcopal Church blesses same-sex marriages and ordains gay bishops. The latter practice had been banned after the 2003 consecration of Gene Robinson caused turmoil in the 77 million strong worldwide congregation.

The Episcopal Church–officially the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America–is the American branch of the Anglican Church, aka the Church of England which King Henry VIII founded when the Pope wouldn’t grant hm a divorce from Catherine of Aragon.  Under the umbrella of the Epicopal Church are congregations in United States, Honduras, Taiwan, Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, the British Virgin Islands and parts of Europe.

The Episcopal Church’s ordination of women as priests beginning in 1974 caused a furor. And recently a number of Episcopal dioceses formed the breakaway, conservative Anglican Church in North America over gay and lesbian issues, saying that the mainstream Episcopal Church and the aligned Anglican Church in Canada

have increasingly accommodated and incorporated un-Biblical, un-Anglican practices and teaching.

And as in most organized religions, there are not only souls at stake but millions of dollars in church property.

Reminds me that Intelligence Squared had a debate last October on the motion: “The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world.” The motion failed. The debate on the motion can be seen here.

As a fallen-away, I get to say: Why is any thinking person still a ‘member’ of the Roman Catholic cult?!
