Live Blog: Palin Speaks at Tea Party Nation

palin_FLYTRAP

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! Sarah Palin speaks at the Tea Party Dinner, the high point of controversy-plagued Tea Bag Nation convention.

The suspense is delightful, for surely the news of the First Dude’s emails have reached the Tea Party citizenry. How will they react to Palin? With gushing love? With suspicion that perhaps the precious Sarah is not all she’s set herself up to be? Or will they blindly embrace her for want of a better idol?

What themes will she touch on? And just as importantly, what rhetorical devices will she employ? The wink? The folksy faux poet? The brave frontier woman?

Join us in deconstructing Palin as we liveblog her speech–both MSNBC and CSPAN are carrying it.

scott brown was just a guy with a truck (and 5 houses)

meghanstabler | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:07 pm 21

She is making a definitive link between the baggers and the Republican party – by referencing Scott Brown

alter | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:07 pm 22

yay, incite revolution!

Lisa Derrick | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:07 pm 23

Scott Brown: Guy with a truck..my ass

In response to Lisa Derrick @ 13

but what did they get rid of? there were no death panels?

meghanstabler | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:08 pm 25

Essentially this speech will be a hijacking of any prior tea party ‘independent’ principles

ratfood | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:08 pm 26

S’okay if I call you Joe? Oops, wrong script…

Elliott | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:08 pm 27

twolf1 | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:11 pm 35

a room full of white people

Knoxville | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:11 pm 36

Did she just take credit on behalf of the Tea Partiers for what happened in MA? Scott Brown didn’t seem to think she had a whole lot to do with it.

ratfood | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:11 pm 37

Nice graphic accompanying the post, BTW.

Not Top-Down…except when you have Fox, Limbaugh, “Tea Party Express” and some guy from the Chicago Board of Trade pushing it.

Knoxville | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:15 pm 54

I wasn’t all that happy with what Bush/Cheney did re our national security. Seriously, using the word “war” says a lot about their worldview. I don’t think Palin’s sophisticated enough to have a substantive worldview.

meghanstabler | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:15 pm 55

I can’t stand Palin’s brand of phony populism

Elliott | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:16 pm 56

Lisa Derrick | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:19 pm 69

misguided thinking–like WMD in Iraq?

cinnamonape | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:19 pm 70

In response to Chris Dietrich @ 68

I coffee’d all over my screen at that!

Chris Dietrich | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:20 pm 72

…and now she’s trying to discuss international relations…brain pain

meghanstabler | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:20 pm 73

Palin does not realize that SCOTUS in 2008 ( under the Bush administration ) stated that Foreign Unlawful Combatant Terrorists Protected by US Constitution

“The US Supreme Court just ruled in a 5 – 4 decision that foreign fighters who are engaged in unlawful war practices and taking part in acts of terrorism should be protected by the United States Constitution and granted the right of habeas corpus. This is a new right which foreign unlawful combatants have never had before.”

cinnamonape | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:20 pm 74

North Korea tested Nuclear Weapons BEFORE Obama was elected…during BUSH’s term, Sarah!

More revisionism.

twolf1 | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:20 pm 75

SpillsAndThrills | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:20 pm 76

meghanstabler | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:24 pm 94

Wow she references Goldwater… certainly not aligned to her Republican or moral values; the increasing influence of the Christian Right on the Republican Party so conflicted with Goldwater’s libertarian views that he became a vocal opponent of the religious right on issues such as abortion, gay rights, and the role of religion in public life.

Riesz Fischer | Saturday February 6, 2010 06:26 pm 109

Obama took questions from House Republicans. Not pre-screened. Unscripted.

Either Judson Phillips doesn’t trust this crowd to let them ask questions by themselves, or he didn’t think Palin could handle questions that she hadn’t seen in advance.

That’s what I understand. So netroots had seven times as many attendees, many excellent non-batshit crazy speakers, and no media attention to speak of. So-called “liberal” media. I have to agree with the CW’s term “lamestream” media, though.

That was an easy 100K, eh?

Agreed Knox Sarah can’t even handle Katie Couric Katie is about as softball as you can get with the questions.
The GOP needs to ask itself can they afford another Bush with the prescreened questions against Obama?

$100,000 plus for a speech that was written for a pep rally, In that it succeded.

As an address that might have set the agenda for a populist movement, she succeded in part and failed in part.

As an effort to widen her appeal beyond that of her fan base, it failed.

How so? The folks in her audience clearly liked her and what she had to say. She sounded the right notes in the anthem that the Tea Partiers sing.

She laid down some basic tenets for the movement: less government, fewer taxes, more energy independence, keep the country secure, listen to the people, be faithful to the constitution. What she did not provide was an guidance as to how the movement should promote those ideals.

Should the movement organize more formally as a party or as a political special interest group? Should the movement seek a more formal association with the American Conservative Movement, or with the GOP? What policies should the Tea Party endorse? If the movement is for less spending then where do we cut? The three biggest areas are: entitlements (medicare and social security), defense (internal and external), and government infrastructure (salaries, and program managment). Details please.

The lack of details is where she failed to widen her appeal. The Tea Party Movement is vocal and visual. It is also small. To grow it, its ideas must appeal to wider audience. Folks like me look for logic, argumentation. Tell me that you are for a better energy program and that you want America’s truckers to convert their rigs to natural gas. We have a 500 year supply of natural gas. If truckers convert to natural gas dependence on foreign oil imports drops by 50%. (These details courtesy of T. Boone Pickens). That will get me to listen.

What Ms. Palin did tonight was to provide a motivational address. That is fine. If that is what she is setting out to do. I had hoped for me. The country needs a vibrant set of grass roots movements representing its diversity.

I suggest that many of those who supported Obama’s nomination and election represented such a movement: progressive. Those who defied the odds in their support of Ron Paul represented another movement: libertarian. The Tea Party Movement could well be an energetic and informed voice of populist conservativism.

For that to happen, it will take more than a rally.

murphthesurf | Saturday February 6, 2010 09:16 pm 404

I am monitoring traffic on this topic on six blogs. The level of activity is low. The number of respondents is low. It appears that Palin’s critics are dominating the discussion. Interesting.

give the woman credit

she is fleecing the wing nuts.

she represents the worst of american racism and greed.

capitalism has done its thing again but no roosevelt to bail us out this time

just a guy that gives great speeches.

the culprit: capitalism left unchecked.

and the middle class lined up to vote for this man.

I knew folks that were personal friends with dutch reagan and he was no friend to the middle class.

like bush jr he knew his base the have mores and the dumbed down.
