RIP: Air America

Air America announced just moments ago

It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business.

I wonder if Air America had gone into markets and given away programming like Rush Limbaugh, allowing local station to keep their local ad revenue, how would their programming have done?

Nicole Sandler, who had me on as a guest a number of times on her late night Air America show , just announced on her Facebook page

I just found out, along with all of you, that Air America media has stopped broadcasting. I WILL DO A LIVE SHOW TONIGHT on ustream. Details coming soon!

Radio veteran Cat Noel explains  that with the advent of live tracking and pre-recording

This is more indicative of economics rather than the snuffing of progressive voices.

Air America’s webpage echoes that sad sentiment.

The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America’s business. This past year has seen a “perfect storm” in the media industry generally. National and local advertising revenues have fallen drastically, causing many media companies nationwide to fold or seek bankruptcy protection. From large to small, recent bankruptcies like Citadel Broadcasting and closures like that of the industry’s long-time trade publication Radio and Records have signaled that these are very difficult and rapidly changing times.

Those companies that remain are facing audience fragmentation as a result of new media technologies, are often saddled with crushing debt, and have generally found it difficult to obtain operating or investment capital from traditional sources of funding. In this climate, our painstaking search for new investors has come close several times right up into this week, but ultimately fell short of success.

Air America gave us Al Franken and Rachel Madow, and many hours of informative programming –plus a nice place for me to chatter away and a friendship with  Nicole. I hope their bandwidth gets filled by Tejano music rather than rightwing or religious programming.

RIP indeed.

really sucks.

mzchief | Thursday January 21, 2010 02:57 pm 3

Air America was giving some great bigger-picture video on the Prop 8 trial.

bayofarizona | Thursday January 21, 2010 02:58 pm 4

Perfect timing though. Imagine the headlines, “Even more proof that america hates liberals.”

Casual Observer | Thursday January 21, 2010 02:59 pm 5

the local Austin, TX affiliate went Tejano one morning a few years back, with no warning. AA was there one day, simply gone the next.

Sam Seder just sent out a tweet condeming the management, which has been said by many. Still, sad to see it go. They were great in the old days, kept me sane (kind of).

Yep. That was my immediate thought.

I can already hear the wingnut radio guys (read: Limbaugh and Beck) starting to crow. Yep, it’s getting scary out there…

EarthquakeWeather | Thursday January 21, 2010 03:05 pm 9

Great couple of days. A wingnut wins MA senate. SCOTUS declares that U.S. government really IS determined by the highest bidder. Big O says HCR is dead. Now this. Can’t wait for tomorrow. Not to be paranoid but if you see some of your progressive friends disappear suddenly in the night, I wouldn’t consider it a coincidence.

stratocruiser | Thursday January 21, 2010 03:11 pm 10

time for the independant lefties (Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, et al) to get busy with the sales crew lining up staions on their own.

Loo Hoo. | Thursday January 21, 2010 03:12 pm 11

So sad. We lost Air America in San Diego a couple of years ago and a sports outfit took the waves.

If you think of the recent economic crisis as another manifestation of shock capitalism, the demise of Air America can be seen by the likes of Tim Geithner and Lloyd Blankfein as a fringe benefit. And now that the Supreme Court has given carte blanche to corporate funding of Congressional and Presidential elections, how hopeful can we be about the future?

Or maybe Progressives can use this to launch a mass movement able..finally…to tear it all down.

You think?

You think not?

Lisa Derrick | Thursday January 21, 2010 03:23 pm 18

There is a political theory called neo-liberalism (which has nothing to do wiht liberal ism as we think of it) which is really about globalization and corporate rule, not real national boundaries, just everyone workin’ for the Man

If the right was “right”, we’d already be there. Faux-populism, no solutions, bigots and assholes, full control over the media as a decentralized series of propaganda outlets, fix up your own house before you criticize ours.

WoodyMcBreairty | Thursday January 21, 2010 03:47 pm 22

This must be 2010′s bad news week – I am so sorry. I kept 2 radios at home on Air America 1150 AM Los Angeles and during my daily walks and week end kinda hikes, I always took my radio and ear phones, listened faithfully to Randi Rhodes, Tom Hartman, Ron Reagan, et al. I will miss that station SO VERY MUCH. I hope these people will find new outlets for their broadcasts and that their numbers will multiply. Our country needs them and stations like Air America MORE THAN EVER in these dangerous and uncertain times…

Hey, wingers – listen up:

Henceforth the commies; the French and Chinese global corporate interests are going to have the power of deciding our domestic politics? It’s our sovereignty that’s at stake. These are no longer American Corporations, they are Global entities and they have no business in our politics!!

Nicole Sandler can be found on her own site Radio Or Not and I am sure others will be doing podcasts, etc…and internet radio is a viable option …

Shit. Just… shit. What I’m wondering is, how come most of the major lib blogs aren’t commenting on it.

Yeah well, Schultz just called Mike Malloy a psycho for questioning 911 Theology, so, I’m nearly done with him. He used to be a republicans just like Matthews.
I used to love to listen to him take the establishment to task. He doesn’t do that anymore, so don’t get your hopes up, he’s obviously gotten “THE WORD”.
I sent him a “comment” about it. He can pick on somebody else.

EarthquakeWeather | Thursday January 21, 2010 04:03 pm 27

Question: what’s the difference between Air America and America Left #167 I think, on XM/Sirius?

Larue | Thursday January 21, 2010 04:14 pm 28

This is sad, I had a very soft spot in my heart for all the manifestations of AA, and all their hosts.

Reading the quotes, Lisa, (I hadn’t heard about Citadel!!!) it brings back a realization I had working in Sac Spanish Radio ’98-03.

What I LEARNED was, thru consolidation, radio groups would buy out any antenna/xmitter they could, at almost any price, to capture a market(s).

THEN, despite the lack of real ad revenue, their value and worth would increase yearly, because like real estate, the value NEVER decreased!

So these groups that got larger and larger after Reagan and Clinton’s deregs, were essentially posting huge gains based on station licenses that accrued in value annually.

The game for many getting INTO the game aside of Clear Channel and the Mays, was to buy stations, group them up, centralize staffing, and satellite distribute programming, build up the empire, and then sell it off for investor payments and huge profits.

I have been WONDERING since 2002 when the over inflated value of station licenses would catch up to the radio market. I often wondered if it EVER would, as the number of licenses is finite per FCC, hence, as it seemed to me they would ALWAYS be highly valued . . . .

It seems, their over valued transmitters are gonna come home to roost . . .

Which means, either OTHERS, smaller owner/operators are gonna come back, or the government will cut back on licenses.

It’s a VERY interesting scenerio playing out now that the economy is so bad, WRT large and medium and small group radio and tv owner/operators.

Thanks for the post, my glass held high for AA and all the past and previe hosts and employees.

Ya did good with what ya had, I thank you for it.

onitgoes | Thursday January 21, 2010 04:24 pm 29

Sorry to hear this but not surprised. There’s not much interest these days in supporting truthful reporting. At least some good came out of it while it lasted, including Senator Franken.

gnomedigest | Thursday January 21, 2010 04:31 pm 30

Citing Rachel Maddow, an apologist and shill for the Democratic Corporate Establishment, is not something that makes Air American appear progressive. It just makes it seem like a minor league version of MSNBC, a place to test out future Democratic Corporate Establishment shills, and then call them up to the big game.

PopeRatzo | Thursday January 21, 2010 05:04 pm 31

With the big Republican majority in Congress now, Fox News record ratings and President McCain entering his triumphant second year, I guess this is to be expected.]

Here in Downtown Chicago, I never could get a decent signal from WCPT-AM anyway, and even after they improved their signal power, they went off the air at 5pm, so it’s not like I’m going to miss much.

Plus they took Sam Seder off the air for…Bill Press. They just didn’t have a recipe for success.

DonkeyHotey | Thursday January 21, 2010 05:36 pm 32

As a former paid subscriber, I did not leave Air America. Air America left me. Back in the Bush era AAR via iTunes was a tonic against the toxic news cycle. Back then they had Franken, Maddow, Rhodes, Garofalo, Seder, Maron, Malloy and etc. All those people left. Thom Hartmann left. About all they had left was Lionel and Montel Williams.

There is some good progressive listening out there via podcast for free. The Young Turks, Mother Jones, Best of the Left, Media Matters with Bob McChesney, and etc.

chipshirley | Thursday January 21, 2010 06:23 pm 34

Re: Air America-

That is sad.

They were on so few broadcast outlets.

True you could hear them on the internet or satellite radio, but just think of the hundreds of millions of people who can listen to AM talk radio for free, anywhere, with a cheap radio.

The rich folk and corporations who own those AM and FM bandwidths have their own agenda.

Here in Athens GA for example, they know this region is liberal and you could probably make more money in a given time slot with a liberal host, but we have the same right wing syndicated shows that south Alabama has. They aren’t driven by profits as much as their personal politics. But they have the rights to the frequencies (even though those are public property).

We do need at least a soft version of the fairness doctrine that forces the owners of the public airwaves to offer a dissenting view.

rightwingnut | Thursday January 21, 2010 06:53 pm 35

Dont you libs get it, the same type idiots that are running the White House ran Air America, they dont have a clue how to run a business, never have and profit is a dirty word,,, what did you expect??? And nobody wants to listen a bunch of liberals talk, what a bunch of maroons…

rightwingerssuck | Thursday January 21, 2010 08:01 pm 36

Hey Rightwingnut: You’re an idiot. Your right wing philosphy of no democratic control of the market place is leading to the destruction of this country. Yet you will take pride in your simplistic philosophy that enriches the very few and leads the rest to the poor house. And listening to Rush and Hannity, isn’t that the height of listening to a bunch of “maroons”.

TheOtherWA | Thursday January 21, 2010 08:31 pm 37

First, many of the AA hosts left AA a long time ago. Want to hear Tom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, & Mike Malloy? Tune in to or stream KPOJ in Portland. They’re all there. Even Ed Schultz, who was never on AA.

Bill Press & Stephanie Miller aren’t AA either. There’s plenty of liberal voices on radio, but not in enough places. Thank God for the internet and streaming!
