Late Night: All White Basketball League–Robetrotters vs Grand Wizards

The  newly formed Atlanta-based All-American Basketball Alliance is proud of its roster of all-white players and plans to start its inaugural season in June. In their press release the AABA says:

Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league.

And adding absurdity to insult, the commissioner of the AABA, Don “Moose” Lewis explains:

There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing. I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like…

Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch? That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.

The AABA is looking for

local contacts to pay $10,000 to become a “licensee” in one of 12 cities throughout the Southeast. Lewis said he has already received threats from people opposed to the roster restrictions and several cities have told him to stay out of town.

Potential team names include the Robetrotters, the Grand Wizards, the White Heat, the Cross Blazers, the Aryan Kings, the Pure Celtics, Caucasian Warriors and the John 3:16ers.

damn skunk(s).
This is a way too bizarre story. Just what we (don’t) need. Is this legal?

holy moly lisa — echoing demi — is this legal?

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:07 pm 11

Okay I admit, I made up the team names, but the story is from MSM

Jim Moss | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:07 pm 12

Has anyone called B.S. on these guys for the assertion that whites are in the minority now?

DrDick | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:08 pm 13
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 8

Maybe we can revive these guys and get them to challenge the AABA boys. Could make for some interesting play by play.

Jim Moss | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:08 pm 14

I thought the names were made up, because John 3:16 is actually a very inclusive Bible passage – “whosever believes in me”!

demi | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:09 pm 15

Suzanne, did you bring the bleach for the Tighty Whities?

PJEvans | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:10 pm 16
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 10

I’d really rather not do that.

Yes, I do think some guy is trying it. He may have less between his ears than he had when he was born, but he can probably get enough like-minded people to have it run for maybe as much as a year, on a shoestring budget. After which I expect him to be in bankruptcy.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:10 pm 17

maybe Moose Lewis meant in sports? But it is creepy concept. nly US born white citizens..so no Eastern Europeans..no Vladi or hwoever wa son the lakers 12 yr ago

DrDick | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:10 pm 18

Somebody should. Even the most “dire” predictions only say that whites will fall below 50% of the American population in the next few decades, but will remain the largest ethnic group in the country by a large margin.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:11 pm 19

Worth noting that in the 1930s, Eastern and Central European Jews dominated professional basketball.

Hey, CT! Somehow appropriate as I just had a long conversation today with a former Afghan student who is in her last year at the university. Her family live in Kabul and she was talking about how horrified everyone is about the attacks. You’d have to ask Rat, but it seems that 40 combined would be more likely.

40 each but only a guess. Freakin’ huge.

Former speedskater Bonnie Blair grew up in this town and was friends with my work supervisor. She would stop in whenever she was in town. Ginormous thighs, rock solid.

demi | Tuesday January 19, 2010 08:50 pm 60

You’re teasing me.
Part of the deal is that get weighed and measured once a month and it goes into the computer so they can gage their efforts. But, it’s usually the larger women who remind me when it’s their measurement date. The hot, tight woman hardly ever do.

In an economic downturn (or any other time) education should be the last thing cut but thanks to American exceptionalism we don’t need no stinkin’ education and can cut it first.

Sorry to hear your mother is having trouble. We were fortunate in that my mom had serious physical problems but stayed mentally sharp right up to the end. She worried about it, because her own mother had developed severe dementia. I’m grateful she was able to dodge that.

Very best wishes to you and your family.

Thanks, RF. It would be easier if she could/would acknowledge that she is having problems. But when she notices things, it’s anything but a “problem.” It’s the hernia surgery she had last month, or it’s the gas leak from 20 years ago, or it’s that she hasn’t slept well, or …

The key right now is to get her out of the driver’s seat (literally).

We’re trying to work through her surgeon. Mom has agreed not to drive until the surgeon releases her to drive. So, we’re trying to get her surgeon to either take the keys away or (at least) get her some cognitive testing.

How do you go about it with the DMV?

Margot | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:33 pm 130

Only way my dad stopped driving is that he forgot how to make out checks and they took the car away. I had no idea about this, living in another state, and he covered so well for any little slips on the phone calls.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:33 pm 131

you can write a letter or better yet make an appt wiht a supervisor and suggest that she get drive tested and take a written test. She’ll fail.

Petrocelli | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:34 pm 132

I think that’s the best approach … allows Mom to maintain some form of dignity, while letting the Surgeon make the determination.

Wiht your mom, have her dr give her the dementia test and you can use those results to get license taken away. Granted her dr may not be comfy discussing this wiht you, but stress that you are concerned baout the safety of others.

She’ll have to answer questions on the dementia test and draw a clock wht hands pointing to a specific time etc..

Ouch. That’s pretty harsh.

Here in NM once you hit 80 you have to renew annually, and they can drive test as part of that. The good news is that once you hit 80, the license is free if you pass the test.

I’ll do it if I have to, but I think I’m going to pin my hopes on the surgeon for now.

She could still shop using coupons though…

Isn’t it wild how old habits die hard…? ;-)

Or Sotomayor as the first Hispanic on the SC. Am I the only one who’s heard of Cardozo? Or maybe Portugese don’t count as Hispanic?

Sent a letter to her today, talked with my brother and sister about it. She’s got all three phone numbers in the letter. I hope she calls one of us.

ratfood | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:51 pm 147

I agree with Petro, the approach through the surgeon allows her to retain her dignity. Also lowers the risk of resentment if she got the idea you and the DMV were colluding to take away her license.

Has she given consent for health care providers to discuss details of her care with you? I don’t know if it is the same in every state but in Illinois the patient has to sign off. If you already have medical POA you would of course be covered.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:52 pm 148

Best of luck.. You could always disconnect the distributor caps…

I have a limited medical POA for both my parents, but I’m not sure that it’s in force as long as they’re competent. And that’s the default assumption.

ratfood | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:53 pm 150

Also, hopefully someone is readily available to drive her or run errands…

nahant | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:53 pm 151

LOL… I cringed a bit before typing that BUT…I just couldn’t let it slip by….
Drambuie will do..

blurtman | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:54 pm 152

I’ve heard of Cardozo. But the whole Hispanic cagtegory is totally bogus, and was coined by the Nixon administration.

Where are the Frenchnics, for example?

ratfood | Tuesday January 19, 2010 09:55 pm 153

If it is the same as here it would not allow you to make decisions if they are deemed competent but I think it allows them to discuss matters with you.

My brother lives about 2 miles away. His kids both live in town.

Most of the places she needs to go are near their house. The supermarket is 3 blocks away.

Carp actually tastes pretty good, if it’s well-prepared. The bones are pretty oppressive, though.

Something I wish I’d thought to mention earlier. Older people do not metabolize meds well and it is not uncommon for some change in drug regimen, or even an established routine to begin causing impairment of cognitive function which family and (unfortunately) even medical professionals mistake for the onset of dementia.

Probably only a slim chance of that being the case but if the change in your mom’s behavior coincided with some addition or modification to her meds I would definitely want to consider the possibility.

FWIW, when I was growing up, my father could fix and make tasty most any type of fish, including suckers and other ‘bottom-feeders,’ that was in the local rivers except carp.

That being said however, he always marveled at another local man who had an annual fish fry and fixed and served nothing but carp and it was always good.

So I can attest from personal experience that it is possible, just not common.
