Live Blogging the Golden Globe Awards

Picture 7

The red carpet is over, the stars have taken their seats, and now Ricky Gervais is about to start his monologue. With Haiti on everyone’s mind, what turn will tonight take?

Come jump in the Firedoglake live blog of the Golden Globes. Here’s a list of the nominees. And don’t forget there are only 86 people in Hollywood Foreign Press Association which is responsible for nominating and voting for the winners. Surely we can pick as well as they!

So with your glasses raised and the caviar–sustainable California sturgeon only, darling–set up with the cute little horn spoons, buckwheat blinis and sour cream, let’s get live blogging!

NBC has possibly ruined tv. Even SNL was ragging on them last night!

Seth Meyers says he doesn’t like this idea that people can get their old jobs back, since he likes doing the Weekend Update and he doesn’t want Jimmy Kimmel knocking on his door!

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 05:45 pm 47

Rayne | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:06 pm 70

What a flaky acceptance by Meryl.

Disgusted that she did not acknowledge Julie Powell, who was the reason Julie & Julia ever came to pass.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:12 pm 75

I love Kevin and Kyra

Rayne | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:13 pm 76
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 71

Yeah, Julie’s daily blog entries combined with her exploration of Julia Child’s cookbook later became a book by Julie; a big chunk of the movie wasn’t about Julia, but about Julie.

Torques me off personally, because Julie and I both were early bloggers at Salon.com; I know she put a lot of heart and soul into the process, and zippo recognition tonight.

Seems like Meryl, who had at least 50% chance of winning, could have mustered a little more composure especially as a grande dame of her profession. If I were her mom, I’d be annoyed even if she did recognize her mother and Haiti’s needs.

jayt | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:14 pm 77

That was a very good movie.

Rayne | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:16 pm 81

Oh dear, teenager agrees, Drew Barrymore’s dress is less than happy. Think the flesh color is wrong on her, and the frills make her look lumpy.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:16 pm 82

and her brain elsewhere…almost Sally Fields YOU LIKE ME

jayt | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:17 pm 83

Rayne | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:18 pm 84

Lisa (79) — heh, hedgehog…good description. I thought it looked like a craft project made with little tinfoil muffin cup liners.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:18 pm 85

There’s too much beige/champagne/Crayola peach (nee flesh) on the carpets these days. Looks so mumsy and washes everyone out

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:23 pm 86

Oh Ricky…I love him! And the director so freaking out spinning cameras.

Rayne | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:28 pm 93
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 85

Yeah, think only redheads can truly carry off Crayola peach (formerly “flesh”) reliably. Warm blondes invariably end up in a dress that’s a shade too pink and brunettes in a dress a shade too yellow.

And then the cut and design; if it was bad in color, it looks worse in flesh-tone.

Ah, here we go, Ashton K without his Twitter for a couple of moments.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:28 pm 94

Rayne | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:41 pm 113

Okay, I’m wrong, very wrong in saying only redheads can carry off flesh-colored dresses.

Or maybe she’s not a real redhead, just fleshy balloons in a red wig…yikes.

Oh, I actually liked the color of the dress, a shade of not-quite grey, not quite heliotrope. But the neckline wasn’t quite right, a shame since the fabric and the back were so nice.

Would have been improved by the application of a brassiere. [sigh]

And a better hair style — far too severe.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday January 17, 2010 06:51 pm 121

Tarantino’s name barely generates a ripple of applause during this guy’s speech, but the camera caught Q’s reaction to the paucity.

i tried to watch my netflix disc of The Proposal today, of course it froze 2/3 way through despite repeated laundering and every trick in my bag .. GOD laserdisc technology has never ceased to blow donkey and annoy the FUCK out of one

anyway, what i saw of The Proposal wasn’t bad .. Sandra rilly can carry any movie, dunno why but she’s irresistable, watchable

Sharkbabe | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:03 pm 129

JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:34 pm 153

Arnold is totally kissing Cameron’s ass right now. Arnold’s going to need a job in a year or so I guess.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:35 pm 154

Is Arnold introducing Avedon or Avatar?

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:35 pm 155
In response to Sharkbabe @ 146

Ron Athey one of the NEA Four wrote a great essay about facial tattoos and how he had potential landlords react rather badly to his. His conclusion, don’t get them unless you’re him.

Like many people today, to look at me you wouldn’t know I have tattoos. But I have enough that I fall in the to deviant category.

JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:35 pm 156

Scorsese’s speech was cool. Most of this has been a real snooze…

Sharkbabe | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:36 pm 157

good, the less of Arnold the better

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:36 pm 158

JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:50 pm 174

Bridges could win an Oscar. He’s done great work for so many years.

Buffy | Sunday January 17, 2010 07:53 pm 175

Jeff gets my vote for best speech of the night (Marty’s doesn’t count because he had time to prepare….) simply for thanking his dad (sorry, old enough to remember Sea Hunt reruns….so I have a soft spot…)

Oh jesus James Cameron, enough with your incontinence issues.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has only 86 members.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:01 pm 181

Nice work Ricky, you showed the show what it is really about.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:02 pm 182

rosalind | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:02 pm 183

wow, they’re re-broadcasting the show here on the west coast.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:02 pm 184

How exciting — we Left Coasters get to see the entire programme again! Which is wonderful because Patrick just got home from work.

Buffy | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:08 pm 185

With all the dissing of Avatar and Glee, well, SOME of us westcoasters are gonna go off and indulge in Desperate Housewives and Brothers&Sisters (yes, with Sally “you really like me!” Field)….

JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:20 pm 186
In response to rosalind @ 176

You noticed that too, eh?

JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:21 pm 187
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 180

A friend of mine actually walked out of Avatar because of the shallow scripting (as he put it). I haven’t seen it yet.

Buffy | Sunday January 17, 2010 08:36 pm 188

Yah, I know people like that. Serves them right to think that just because it’s got subtitles for the blue people that it’s going to be Francois Truffaut…

Seriously, James Cameron directed it, if you expect “great art” you get what you deserve. The rest of us enjoyed it because it’s got action, really ground-breaking special effects, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney at her Ripley-best, and a great librul, tree-huggin’ message (put those box-office receipts in your snowmobile gas tank and smoke ‘em, Sarah!). What’s not to like?

cregan | Sunday January 17, 2010 09:00 pm 189

Avatar was very mediocre aside from special effects. Same movie in 2 D would be a flop. Dances with Wolves meets the Ewoks.

I liked Bastards, but a few scenes of really unnecessary gruesome violence. I don’t mind violence in movies, but a few parts were beyond. Even so, two masterpiece scenes–the farm house opener and the basement tavern–make it worth seeing and awarding.

My pick was Hurt Locker which grabbed you from “go” and didn’t let up.
