Skate Diplomacy for Cuba?

Small acts of kindness can cause a shift. When New Jersey skate shop owner Chris Nieratko learned that Cuban skaters

rode awful setups, warped and dilapidated decks, rusty bearings, square wheels, and skate shoes that were so worn and torn they looked more like sandals or flip-flops than anything

he decided to do something for these kids who were affected by the ongoing embargo that started nearly half a century before they were born.

The only way for Cuban skaters to get a new deck is if someone brings it to them. So Chris did.

And here’s the whole story, recorded for posterity and presented by ViceTV.

What a great thing to do. I love to skate, it’s like flying. I’m so glad these kids got new gear.

Part 2 said “held together by nails and reinforced with 2″×4″s”

Uh, hmmm,,, that’s what we kids played with when I grew up back east.
We called them scooters. In addition to iron wheels, nails & 2x4s, we used wooden milk crates to construct our Scooters.

That and Soap Box Derby imitations. Bad imitations. More like something out of “Little Rascals.”

When we were kids, my brothers and I took roller skate wheels and put them on wood to make a “skateboard”. Dangerous times!

Then Dad let us hang onto the bumper while he drove on the expressway. Man, the sparks really flew when one of the wheels came off!

Kids weren’t overprotected in those days… :-)

No kidding,

In my neighborhood we hung on to busses instead of cars.

At least we knew where a bus was headed.

That’s good. lmao

In my day we never took a train but when I was about 10 or so, one sunday I managed to get a bulldozer going in an automobile scrapyard.
Scared the piss out of me but it was lots of fun.

More proof that America is controlled by small minded, self serving, feud loving, rightwing, conservative, Republican, religious, PUKES!

Now where did we put that guillotine?
