Late Night: Westboro Baptist Church: A Series of Responses

While the Quakers at Sidwell Friends had one response to Westboro Baptist Church’s two day protest, earlier this year these frat boys at University of Chicago had another; both were very appropriate and grounded in each group’s philosophy. And let’s not forget the brave rick roller in Florida!

Today and yesterday, Westboro Baptist “Church”, the ultra-hateful bunch of venom spouting freaks–who are all part of Fred Phelps’ extended family, and are a good example of why churches should lose their tax exempt status–took their vile bullshit too far.

Not content with carrying their signs about God hating America and fags at the funerals of soldiers, these embarrassments to decent Christians and Americans picketed across the street from Sasha and Malia Obama’s school, Sidwell Friends, a Quaker run academy, carrying signs with their usual blunt, lowbrow, below the belt anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama slogans that focus on a God of wrath and cruelty, which is not Jesus, who said that his arrival and sacrifice kinda wiped out all the Old Testament grumpiness.

In response to the WBC’s appearance across the street from Sidwell, Ellis Turner, the associate head of school at Sidwell Friends, told TPM

We support the First Amendment here, so there was nothing we wanted to do about it. There was nothing they did other than offend those who didn’t agree with their bigoted viewpoints.

Earlier this year, the Phelps family circus of stupidity picketed a school in Orange Country, CA which was performing the musical “Rent,” and they have several high schools on thir November schedule. Their website also claims they were planning to protest at the Ft Hood memorial today, though no news reports have confirmed their appearance.

The Phelps family’s dogma is founded in the idea that 9/11, our current wars, any disaster natural or man-made, and most recently the Ft Hood shooting are all God’s punishment, a result of America’s refusal to condemn homosexuality and abortion. But mainly homosexuality. And for good measure Jews: WBC protested today in Florida at Roth JCC of Orlando / Jewish Federation / Holocaust Memorial. Tomorrow, along with being obnoxious at Arlington Cemetery and the National World War II Memorial, the nasty bastards will be demonstrating outside the U.S. Holocaust Museum.

Maybe they should protest an Organized Crime member’s funeral — I’m sure the counter-protest would be of a more permanent nature.

SunnyNobility | Tuesday November 10, 2009 08:15 pm 8

The only good thing to be said of them is they are indeed evidence the First Amendment lives.

There’s another positive: WBC brings people together. You don’t like ‘em, I don’t like ‘em, most of the teabaggers don’t like ‘em either. Phelps has made his little hate carnival into a national pariah and disgrace, and everyone (else) knows it.

The WBC FAQ says

Can I donate money to you? Can I buy one of your awesome shirts?

No, you cannot donate money to us. We don’t accept donations. We don’t want your money. We don’t make merchandise of the Gospel. “Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.” (John 2:16). “Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.” (3 John 1:7). Likewise, we don’t sell shirts. If you want one, go to a local shirt-maker near you and custom-make your own.

The law suit (form wikipedia)
On March 10, 2006 WBC picketed the funeral of Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder. On June 5, 2006 the Snyder family sued Fred Phelps, WBC, and unnamed others for defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. On October 31, 2007, WBC, Fred Phelps and his two daughters were found liable for invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. A federal jury awarded Mr. Snyder $2.9 million in compensatory damages, then later added a decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and an additional $2 million for causing emotional distress (A total of $10,900,000). The organization said it would not change its message because of the verdict…

On February 4, 2008 U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett upheld the ruling but reduced the punitive damages from $8 million to $2.1 million. The total judgment now stands at $5 million.

An appeal by WBC is still pending.Liens have been ordered on church buildings and Phelps’ law office in an attempt to ensure that the damages are paid.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday November 10, 2009 08:27 pm 21

Organized counter protesters: The Patriot Guard Riders are a motorcyclist group comprised mostly of veterans who attend the funerals of members of the U.S. Armed Forces at the invitation of the deceased’s family. The group was initially formed to shelter and protect the funerals from protesters from the WBC, but has since expanded its activities beyond those funerals covered by the WBC

And it should be all or none. If one “church” I cna;t mention because Tom Cruise might sue me can get the IRS to allow their members to deduct “religious services and training” then ALL religious groups should be allowed to be deduct these things!

Wow, this is interesting–from Wikipedia

All the principals of the Phelps Chartered law firm, a firm founded by WBC founder Fred Phelps, are members of WBC. Phelps Chartered handles most of WBC’s legal work.

More on the lawsuit judgment being reduced.

Judge Bennett said that Monday’s ruling was based in part on the financial resources of the church. Financial records submitted to the court indicate that Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, and his daughters Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebekah Phelps-Davis have a combined net worth of under $1 million. They are seeking to delay payment of the judgment.

Wonder if these financial records are public.

I was thinking the other day that there is a certain profound irony in the fact that the neocon pre-cursor arch demon Samuel Huntington, the man who arguably started our country and indeed the whole planet down a long road to perdition, with the argument that humanity faced and our country (as the leader of the “west”) must prepare for a grand clash civilizations, mostly between our own “enlightened” white civilization and the dual threat of alien foreign fundamentalism and communism. Well.. he got his clash of civilizations alright, except that it’s really a budding civil war – between our own teabagging domestic fifth column of fascists, tribal thugs, authoritarians, racists, mysogenists and fundamentalists and the more “enlightened” members of our own country.

Yes it is depressing, but isn’t it that it’s depressing because a lot of the clashing is about being determinant?

I mean one group being on top of the other. And who is seeking to dominate? Not progressives. We want a level field, and then go plant what you want.

These authoritarian others are thundering “Be thou beneath our will!”
I don’t describe that attitude as self-determinism, I describe it as “other-determinism”, better said as authoritarianism, and it’s certainly not freedom IMO.

All of Phelps’ adult offspring are either lawyers or married to lawyers. They essentially goad people into reacting to them and then they sue. They are hyper litigious and they get people to settle out of court. They are shakedown artists of the highest order. They are as offensive as they can be to intentionally get people to react with physical violence. Then they sue.

Bravo to the lads of Alpha Delta Phi for their excellent rebuff of Phelps’ shithead posse. It definitely makes the list of top 10 best responses to his brand of imbecilic bigotry.

I can proudly say that Phelps and his inbred pack of moron bastards picketed my church a couple of years ago. We totally ignored them. It was but a couple of the very least committed of his tribe and they didn’t stay long. I guess they got bored.

I’ve been somewhat curious about Phelps. At least one of his signs has included stick figures depicting what appears to be two men engaged in a rousing bout of anal sex. Someone had to spend quite a bit of time working out the logistics of the act and the logistics of graphically depicting the act. The amount of time needed to contemplate all of that seemed way too long for someone who ostensibly is opposed to homosexuality.

Methinks maybe Fred doth protest too much? Trying to hide a case of self loathing?
