Late Night: Family Planning Could Save Planet

There are just too many people on earth, and sadly contraception is out of reach of the millions of women who want it. Our food and water supplies are dwindling, and carbon emissions increasing. Regarding the latter, Andrew Revkin in the New York Times writes:

one of the cheapest ways to curb emissions in coming decades would be to provide access to birth control for tens of millions of women around the world who say they desire it.

Revkin cites UN data suggesting

that meeting unmet need for family planning would reduce unintended births by 72 per cent, reducing projected world population in 2050 by half a billion to 8.64 billion. Between 2010 and 2050 12 billion fewer “people-years” would be lived – 326 billion against 338 billion under current projections. The 34 gigatons of CO2 saved in this way would cost $220 billion – roughly $7 a ton [metric tons]. However, the same CO2 saving would cost over $1trillion if low-carbon technologies were used.

Rush Limbaugh’s response:

Mr. Revkin, why don’t you just go kill yourself and help the planet by dying?

Mmmm, let’s see–conservatives are opposed to family planning, but want everyting fo themselves…that doesnt really work out, but they want to breed more of themselves to take over the world form all the Not Thems who are breeding?

ThingsComeUndone | Tuesday October 20, 2009 08:07 pm 3

Uh Lisa how many hungry kids could we save if we all gave up meat? I confess I am guilty but how much more food would there be then even assuming we got enough protein from plants?

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday October 20, 2009 08:07 pm 4

AZ Matt | Tuesday October 20, 2009 08:10 pm 8

I remember a family planning person, a guy, in hte area that I worked in Kenya back in the late 70′s. He thought that women should have at least 5 kids before stopping. In the area where he lived the average household was about 11. There were many cultural reasons to have the large families: not all children survived; on farms the older children performed labor; and it spoke to the manhood of the husband. On one island in Lake Victoria there was one fellow with 75 wives and about 250 kids. Theink of the parent-teacher conferences!

Jeffrey Sachs in The End to Poverty points out that by providing women wiht lving wages obs in thrid world countries (usually textile work), they don;t need to marry to become less of a burden to their families. Because they arent married off, they dont have kids so soon, and thus have fewer kids.

When the Pill hit the market in ’64 it did more to empower women than any other invention in history. “Social conservatives” are still pissed off about that.

I suspect their opposition to abortion has more to do with making women subservient than protecting the unborn, since the same people are typically opposed to sex-ed and contraception, the two things that would reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and help diffuse the abortion issue.

Hugh | Tuesday October 20, 2009 08:23 pm 24

My formulation of this is: PT = CI, where P is population, T is level of technology, C is resource consumption, and I is environmental impact. In other words, higher populations at higher technological levels require both greater use of resources and entail more severe environmental impacts. The variables are not independent of each other. Given our present level of technology, for example, we are rapidly approaching a wall in terms of energy consumption and water use. Even with much greater environmental impacts this is true. What this means is that our current world is unsustainable and if we do not curb our population voluntarily and drastically, disease, famine, and war will.

Why go there with Viagra unless you want boys? Florida, Texas, California has less AIDS and more Brown Women the price is higher but Rush with a 100 million dollar contract could afford it.
Given all that Rush has said about Gays he must have known that fact, but still he went. Why for Viagra? the guy Doctor shops for Oxy in numbers that could overdose an entire high shchool (my high school was small granted) still he could have scored that here in America.
The Process of Eimination suggests the only thing he could get in the Dominican Republic that he could not get in America is a wide selection of boys.

What’s interesting is that Rush has no children himself. He keeps cats. Perhaps the women he married decided his genome was not worth perpetrating into the next generation. Or perhaps he himself has decided that having children might slice a little bit into his wealth and lifestyle “choices”. He’s definitely a hedonist…and not travelling to the Dominican Republic for the opulent lifestyle.

Interesting as well is that he’s never had any known cases of illegitimate heirs claiming “Papa Rush” should be sending them child support.

So why isn’t Rush telling his ditto-heads to go “ditto” themselves and follow El Rushbo’s example…whatever that is? Self-sterility? Asexuality? Impotence? Dominican pool boys? Or excellent contraception?

You’re move Rush!

About 20 of the 24 essential amino acids are available from plants. Two are endogenously produced or available from animal protein. The remaining two are available from only very rare plants, or (more widespread) animal sources. My understanding is that these are critical for proper neural development in developing foetuses. Primates have lost the capability of self-producing them from other amino acids…but the frugivorous and leaf-eating species get them from eating insects. But human babies would require a lot more in terms of quantity because of our larger brain.

Many cultures replace the need for large amounts of mammal meat in their diet by substituting fish, arthropods or even insects (or grubs). No human society goes entirely without animal protein, though some use things like raw honey (which often includes larvae and larval sacs) or milk.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2152735_garlic-lemonade-cold-flu.html

Bring one quart of pure water to a boil in a saucepan. While heating the water, coarsely chop the garlic.

Step
2
Remove boiling water from heat, and add garlic. Cover and let steep for 30 minutes.

Step
3
Strain the water into the quart jar. Dispose of the garlic.

Step
4
Squeeze into the jar the juice of 1 large or 2 small lemons. Pour the warm garlic lemonade into a teacup, and sweeten with honey to taste (1-2 tablespoons).

Step
5
Sip on this throughout the day. It may be reheated over low heat on the stove if desired, but do not boil or heat in the microwave, as these methods destroy the vitamin C and the helpful properties of the garlic.

Ooops, this is what I get for spouting science outside my area without using a reference. Here’s a good, simple discussion of sources of the EIGHT essential amino acids. Note however that the endogenous synthesis of the NON-ESSENTIAL AA’s occur in adults….not children. And endogenous production might not be at levels that sustain an active, growing or stressed individual.

Some of the essentials are available from things like yeast (which are killed organisms…although many vegetarians would not blink an eye at consuming them). Others are available from animal by products or AVOCADOS. If we all went veggie I suspect that avocado plantations would be the next big thing in the rainforest.

Some are available in small quantities from other plants, but you’d need to eat a lot of cacao or chocolate seeds to get the necessary amounts. Of course these could be processed into “non-animal” sourced multivitamins.

Humans CAN cut back on animal meat consumption by a lot, but an occasional fish or chicken is really what prevents many families from falling into malnutrition since they don’t have access to other foods.

I actually don’t think that overpopulation is our biggest issue. Inefficiency, underdevelopment, inequality in the distribution of wealth and resources, tribalism and corruption deplete more resources than mere numbers. Yes, the world is getting crowded but it’s carrying capacity would be a lot higher if only structural imbalances, injustices and inequities can be even slightly mitigated. Of course, I am a great supporter of universal contraception access, family planning and sex ed – such access should be universal entitlements.. but we also should be careful not to see such things as necessary just so those who live with way too much in the developed world can keep on using 3 to 5 times their entitlement of carbon emissions (we’re the 5x, by the way). Relatively small changes in lifesyle for most middle and upper income members of the developed world – the top 10% slice of humanity – would reduce our collective developed world footprint by 2/3rds – using transit, flying no more than once or twice a year, etc, and probably increase the planet’s carrying capacity over time by over 30%. For example.

Of course, if the world’s Rethugs, reactionaries, tribalists thugs, and fundamentalists would like to follow Boss Limpbark’s recommendation or move to Uranus, I would welcome it.

It’s interesting Connecticut was so far behind the ball on birth control. If it were just the poor who had to do without contraception, it would probably still be illegal.

In the mid ’60s, my newly married friends often planned to teach for a year or two to amass a down payment. If they became pregnant, they were required to quit teaching as soon as they “showed”. Not that long ago.

A little off topic but it was a third world pharmaceutical company using American researchers that “broke” the monopoly of the big Euro-Pharma’s on contraceptive steroids. In 1930s, scientists had already isolated and determined the structure of the animal steroid hormones and found that high doses of androgens, estrogens or progesterone inhibited ovulation. The Euro-Pharmas charged outrageous amounts for these.

Just before WWII, Russell Marker, a chemist at Pennsylvania State, found a method of synthesizing progesterone from plants (initially sarsaparilla). Three years later he discovered a cheaper source nd method, extracting the saponin from inedible Mexican yams (Dioscorea mexicana) found in the rain forests of Veracruz near Orizaba. His research sponsor Parke-Davis showed no interest,so Marker left Penn State and in 1944 co-founded Syntexs in Mexico City. Syntex broke the monopoly of European pharmaceutical companies on steroidses, and the price of progesterone plummeted 200-fold over the next decade.

Early in 1951, reproductive physiologist Gregory Pincus met Margaret Sanger of Planned Parenthood (PPFA). Pincus used a small grant from PPFA to begin hormonal contraceptive research that demonstrated injections of progesterone suppressed ovulation in rabbits. That year G. D. Searle & Company refused Pincus’ request to fund his contraceptive research. To make a long story short, after many efforts to obtain funding from recalcitrant Big Pharma -Pincus’s colleagues C. Chang and Rock found the three most promising compounds were Syntex’s norethindrone and Searle’s norethynodrel and norethandrolone.

Chemists Carl Djerassi, Luis Miramontes, and George Rosenkranz at Syntex in Mexico City had synthesized the first orally highly active progestin norethindrone in 1951. Pincus and Rock selected Searle’s norethynodrel for the first contraceptive trials in women, citing its total lack of androgenicity versus Syntex’s norethindrone’s very slight androgenicity in animal tests. But ultimately Djerassi’s version showed greater success and was adopted.

The first-world lifestyle takes five planet Earths to be sustained. The recent reaction of pretty much all governments to the recent spike in global food prices suggests we have little solidarity with the extreme poor. It´s A-OK politically for 1.3 billion people to live destitute and in constant food insecurity. This is wrong, of course, but hey, not my prob, Dude. Perhaps humanity is headed for an end analogous to what happens every few weeks to the mice population in the Bread House at the San Diego Zoo (i.e. they breed and feast like crazy and eventually eat themselves out of house and home; at which point they are fed to the snakes).

Nobody wants violent depopulation events, but the problem of stabilizing the global population by non-Malthusian means has largely received short shrift. If population is discussed in international forums, it is something modest like maybe smaller families might be a nice idea. The Gates Foundation, for example, is looking at benign means of population control such as education for girls, guaranteeing a small pension for every person on the planet, improvements in children´s health, etc., that conceivably could put a ceiling on world population at 8 billion while improving our lot generally. The fact that all political and religious systems in recent times have been predicated on economic and population growth doesn´t help. As recently as a decade ago, advertising archetypes included the Dad who takes his youngin´s out for huntin´n´fishin´ and other such layin´waste to the countryside toolin´about in some huge vehicle. As movements such as the Quiverfulls suggest, there is a strong ideological temptation to beggar-thy-neighbor by flaunting any implicit two-child-per-couple policy. Even worse, the law is dreadfully behind the curve on this. The US Supreme Court, even in the Age of Octomom, treats procreation as a fundamental right that never attenuates — even after the 18th kid.

Blub | Tuesday October 20, 2009 10:02 pm 109

put another way, we in the US should only be allowed to complain about India’s birth rate after we reduce our annual capita carbon footprint from 23 tons of CO2 a year to a still greedily abusive 6 tons (most of the planet makes do with about 1.5 tons), and our per capita daily use of water from 120+ gallons of water a day to a still luxurious 30 gallon. (half of humanity only gets to use 10 gallons or less a day). If we still think the planet is overcrowded and resources are depleting after we all make these perfectly reasonable lifestyle changes, then let’s talk about poor people having too many babies…

The Comstock Laws were all over the country. There were dozens of efforts over the years to repeal it in Connecticut, which had a bit more Catholic population than elsewhere in the Northeast. Griswold realized that it would be a good “test case” with changing mores regarding women after WW2. They could have tried it in the deep South or Mid-West but the view was that if the succeeded they had a nationwide law…if they failed they had created enough of a debate to eradicate the Connecticut Comstock Law.

Rush Limbaugh doesn’t need birth control; he IS birth control.

He has no children of his own. He does however, have a rather stout and hefty carbon ass print.

djfourmoney | Tuesday October 20, 2009 11:13 pm 116

This is something be chirped on the left every so often, usually by Thom Hartmann. Helping developing nations with birth control could help. But this is mostly something that’s coming from White People, hmmm. They also say we should stop eating meat because of all the cows and pigs farting around the planet create green house gas, how stupid.

This is a MESS largely created by the Industrial Age and years of putting it off. Minorities didn’t power nor now control the great industrial power(s) in the world, umm who does? I shouldn’t have to tell you.

So now we’re just to suppose to stop having children because you say it will help the planet?

This is the unnerving part about the Green Movement, most of the voices are…. The only notable person of color in the Green Debate is Van Jones and last I heard he isn’t advocating Government Enforced Birth Control ala China or Japan no matter what the UN data shows.

This also goes along with telling China they can’t burn anymore coal or telling India the same thing and not to build cheap cars like the Tata because it would put more fossil burning cars on the road.

Since when did Developed Nations know everything? Isn’t this LARGELY their FAULT? The EU and United States should spend time telling its people don’t pro-create and see what kind of reaction you get…

Anyone remember how important ZPG was back in the late 60′a – early 70′s?

eggroll | Tuesday October 20, 2009 11:59 pm 119

Interestingly, ZPG, which gets almost no discussion, has been a partial success. World population growth has been on a steady downward trend since the early 1970s. The problem is that even at today´s lower rate of population growth, we are still adding about one Germany (80 million people) a year. Given the current glide path, the world population peaks at 10 billion in 2050, with the US population somewhere around 420 million. Ray Kurzweil expects several changes before that. 1) Life extension as machines and humans merge. 2) A world government by 2020. 3) Delinking of humans from biological determinants around 2045, when augmented beings might start to keep people like pets. In such circumstances, they might have no qualms about culling the herd to a manageable size of a billion or less.

It’s because every prime number is either one whole number or two whole numbers greater than a number divisible by 3. If P (“prime”) – 1 can be divided evenly by 3, the repeating decimal in P/3 is .33333[...]; if P – 2 can be evenly divided by 3 the repeating decimal is .6666[...]. The intervals are currently random. If you find a pattern and a way to predict which prime comes where, you’ll be a very wealthy person.

This has been another production of “way more math than you ever wanted to look at, from a mathematician who has nothing better to do with himself.”

No, no, no, you silly person! You must send missionaries to Africa and to wherever the other not thems are and convert them. Then you can let them die in poverty with a peaceful heart because they will go to heaven instead of hell. But you must not allow birth control because every pregnancy is God’s will. If you are wondering why God would want more kids to be born into poverty or to go to hell if the missionaries don’t get to them in time, you haven’t been reading up much on the God these types of Christians believe in.
