Now THIS Is Art!

Earlier this week James McNaughton’s dire painting One Nation Under God–a wretched piece of pompous pap that makes Thomas Kinkade look like Rembrandt (well almost)–hit the media. McNaughton’s simplistic take on America and the Founding Fathers and his need to explain the symbolism in the picture calls to mind this quote by H.P. Lovecraft, as it appears this is how McNaughton and his ilk think we should think:
We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity; and it was not meant that we should voyage far.
Thank Cthulhu, the response–seen above–was swift, immediate and artistically articulate.
Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu America wgah’nagl fhtan
(In his house at America dead Cthulhu lies dreaming.)Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn
(Yes! Yes! Cthulhu dreams!)Cthulhu America fhtagn
(Cthulhu dreams in America)
[H/T James St.James]

It’s so refreshing to see that somewhere, somebody out there gets it.
My only hope is that Mr. McNaughton is aware of this delightful take on his work.
