Pelosi Says “No” to Michael Jackson Proclamation

michael-jackson.thumbnail.jpgAs part of the televised necro-celebration of Michael Jackson, Representative Shirley Jackson Lee spoke about the singer’s accomplishments as an entertainer and humanitarian, saying that she was introducing a Congressional resolution honoring Michael Jackson as a humantiarian, artist and civl rights figure. The  resolution is a testimony to Jackson’s desire to make the world a better place and

1) recognizes Michael Jackson as a global humanitarian and a noted leader in the fight against worldwide hunger and medical crises; and

(2) celebrates Michael Jackson as an accomplished contributor to the worlds of arts and entertainment, scientific advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and global food security.

But wisely, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said

What I have said to my colleagues over the years . . . is that there is opportunity on the floor of the House to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish. A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views that are not necessary at this time.

In other words, the debate would waste important time since there are some dicy parts of Jackson’s life, since two weeks ago, during a moment of silence for Jackson on the House floor, Rep. John Yarmuth marched out. Yarmuth later told Sarah Palin’s fave chronicler, the ever bombastic John Zeigler that he was

close to nauseated…we’ve never done it for a celebrity..totally uncalled for…people thought that was it was inappropriate, totally over the top, uncalled for.

by the House’s response to the news of Jackson’s death.

And of course Rep, Pete King famously called Jackson a pedophile and a drug addict. King is facing re-election with Jackson fans raising money for opponent because of those comments.

Perhaps the House members who wish to memorialize Jackson can do by making donations in his name to any of the charities listed on resolution.

I don’t get it. The House does those resolutions all the time. Or is it because Pelosi would be embarrassed because most of the Republicans would vote no(or not vote) on something that is almost always unanimous?
