Late Night: Sarah Palin–GOP WunderBoner, Cash Cow? Or Both?

Okay, yes I am being sexist. And if a man wrote the same headline, I would still laugh.

Palin is up to more that playing with the dirt and fish scales under her nails as she goes on about in her faux-folksy facade to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell. Some people are thinking that with Palin saying she most likely won’t run for President, or at least hedging a bunch about her plans, she’s knocked the spine out of the Elephants, leaving no real viable GOP candidates (was there ever one for 2012?).

But in reality, she’s in fine form to be a super-charged  fund raising Energizer Bunny machine for candidates in 2010 and beyond, and basically admits it to Anchorage Daily News:

Palin said she is embarking on a "different, more effective path" than finishing her term. Asked how, she said she didn’t know at this point, other than to campaign for political candidates who represent the values she supports.

"Work hard for others who want to fight for things that Alaska needs and America needs. … What is good for Alaska, energy independence, our contribution to national security and reining in our own state government, which contributes to reining in our national government, which is what we need. I can do that outside having a title," she said.

She also spelled in out in her "Don’t Cry For Me, Alaska" speech:

I’ll work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and life… I’ll work for and campaign for those proud to be American, and those who are inspired by our ideals and won’t deride them.

I will support others who seek to serve, in or out of office, for the right reasons, and I don’t care what party they’re in or no party at all. Inside Alaska – or Outside Alaska.

Over at Theopalinism.com, Leah Burton has parsed Palin’s higher calling:

She is not kidding when she states that she is not retreating – but advancing.  Once the decision was made by herself and other contributors to her decision as to how to best utilize Palin’s extraordinary popularity to advance the power and resurgence of the GOP, resignation was the ONLY option that makes sense for the following reasons – because she is now free to traverse this country unencumbered by official duties AND:

  1. Excite and ignite her base – a base broader than that solely of the GOP, bringing together extremists, Libertarians, Constitution Party members as well as GOP loyalists – all under one umbrella in a way that no other republican candidate has been able to achieve to date;
  2. Because of her “rock star” popularity she is an invaluable asset to the floundering Republican Party as a fundraiser for the GOP (whether Mitt, Newt, Huckabee or any of the rest of the presidential hopefuls care to admit it through clenched teeth);
  3. They can capitalize on her ability to generate untold numbers of evangelical extremists to register to vote significantly increasing the likelihood for success in local and national elections;
  4. And, while everyone debates over “will she/won’t she” regarding 2012, the GOP strategists are winding her up to let her go on the 2010 campaign trail in an all out effort to dominate local, state and congressional seats – by riling the masses into a pitched fervor through propaganda over Obama = Bad! Using all the scare tactics and fear-mongering popular in GOP campaigns such as Muslim, socialism, debt, non-aggressive defense posture, and the terrorism threat to the safety of our country;
  5. And THEN lastly, it does give her time to consult with the religious ghost-writer assigned from Zondervan [Christian] Publishing to meet her contract obligation for her upcoming book release in Spring of 2010…which is an incredible tool that will have tremendous impact on growing her followers when she does in fact, decide to throw her harpoon into the presidential race of -2012.

 And the GOP is thrilled to have a combo Wunderboner–designed to disembowel the Democrats by being able to pull the chick card like she did with David Letterman, hiding behind the Holy Skirted Sanctity of American Womanhood (and like, I’ve noticed that liberals/progressives are sensitive about sexism and racism, unlike say Rush Limbaugh)–and a cash cow who can whip crowds from across the full spectrum of the conservatives into a pitchfork-carrying, torch-waving frenzy and get them to open their wallets.

Let’s see… what fraction of these groups were not already Kook-Aid [sic] drinkers? Do you think it was even 10% I don’t.

American elections are won in the middle, and Caribou Barbie doesn’t have much appeal in the middle. So, you go girl! We’ll have a Democratic majority for the rest of my life.

her “rock star” popularity
a base broader than that solely of the GOP, bringing together extremists, Libertarians, Constitution Party members as well as GOP loyalists

Given that the base they describe constitutes less than a quarter of the population, I would say that is a “Rock Star” of the caliber of Vanilla Ice or Milli Vanilli.

And now for the good news

An overwhelming majority (73%) of American voters agreed that “people of faith should advocate for policies that protect the interests of all and promote the common good” compared to only 22% who preferred pursuing “policies that protect their values and way of life.” By a nearly 2-to-1 margin, those favoring a common good politics said Palin’s addition made them less likely to support the GOP ticket (27% less likely vs. 15% more likely).

West slope cutthroat trout are one of the native species in western Montana and are threatened, largely as the result of the introduction of a number of alien species. In particular rainbow trout (native to the Columbia River watershed, but not this part), brown trout (German), and northern pike. All of these are much more aggressive fish and out compete our poor cutthroats. FWP is trying to bring them back and so there is a ban on taking them. That only applies to rivers. You can still take cutthroats from most of the lakes.

This is right on point. We make a major mistake when we underestimate the appeal of this empty skirt to the thug base or to ” right-leaning” independents who are groping for a reason to vote for thugs.

The seductive allure of laughing off Palin’s stupidity with like-minded thinkers is much too passive a strategy to employ.

If Limbaugh had been attacked at every turn instead of laughed at, or merely snickered about, his schtick would never had endured. Palin is similar in that she is the only thing thugs have to rally around (in their minds.) She must be broken into little pieces.

No progressives don’t have the appetite for destroying others that is so natural and integral to wingnuts. We need to think of it as saving what’s left of the democracy. We need to use her own words to hang her (figuratively). There’s plenty to work with.

Right. That is because idjots and tourists (see idjots) can’t tell the difference between cutthroats and cutbows, even though it is pretty easy. FWP (Fish, Wildlife, & Parks) really don’t give a damn about cutbows, but they do not want the idjots taking cutthroats by mistake. The rule here in western Montana is that if it has the red/orange slashes under its chin (the marker of the cutthroat and where it gets its name), then you have to throw it back. Keeps it simple enough that even the tourists can figure it out.

An XX person would be more sensitive to that than an XY.

Funnydiva2002 | Tuesday July 7, 2009 09:01 pm 106
In response to Lisa Derrick @ 87

No, because apparently people can’t tell the difference well enough to keep ‘em from taking the cut-throats.
The hope is probably that the cut-throats will back-cross with the cut-bows, and outcompete the rainbows that are taken out by the fisherpeople…so eventually they’ll be genetically mostly cut-throat.

We still have plenty here in central FL, but prices are way up.

DrDick | Tuesday July 7, 2009 09:02 pm 109

While I think they would like too, FWP has no intention of eliminating the introduced species (except maybe the pike). Fishermen would strangle them. Rainbows are much more fun to catch than cutthroats.

Cutbows only breed with themselves and rainbows. The theory is that human predation on the other species will give the cutthroats a chance to rebound.

Thanks for the post.

She’s dangerous in many ways to what little we have left of a republic democracy.

And she’s gonna pull the 1/4 into a frenzied hysteria. If a LEADER should arise from that hysteria, look out.

While our corporatist facism looks a look like 1930’s Germany, I believe the right wing is capable of actually BEING the facist element to fear.

Time will tell . . . it always does.

For the digitally inclined, Wednesday marks a cool spot in sequential history. At exactly 12:34:56, the time and date will be 12:34:56 7/08/09. That only happens once — or twice — every 100 years, so for some, it’s worth celebrating.
