Thousand in Los Angeles Protest Iranian Election; Twitter, Bloggers Change Time Zones

A protest over the Iranian elections and the violence in Tehran began at 11am Saturday in Westwood at the Federal Building close to UCLA. A second protest at the same location began at 3pm and  is just now winding down. Singing, chanting and carrying signs, an estimated one thousand demonstrators showed solidarity with protesters in Iran. Another demonstration was held in Orange County.

Meanwhile, on Twitter and Facebook and in blogs, users are changing their timezone to GMT +3:30/Tehran.

Set your location to Tehran and time zone to GMT 3.30 to protect the protesters from Iranian security forces hunting bloggers – pass it on

Lisa,

an interesting dynamic seen when cruising thru announcement sites – thought it would prove especially interersting in L.A. with such a large Persian population, esp with so many of them Pahlavi (sp?) loyalists -

anyway, been seeing notes like – doesn’t matter that our families haven’t spoken in ten years, or we’ve never agreed on anything – We Are All Persians Now And Must Unite

an example from the Univ of Texas contingent:

This protest is specifically organized to protest the re-election of President Ahmadinejad. There are many other injustices and issues that has divided our community into different groups. However we believe that this is the one issue that can unite Iranians of all backgrounds, including those that voted and those that refused to vote in this year’s election

Allahu Akbar !
