Late Night: Letterman Show Goes on Despite Angry Mini-Mob of 50

While 50 protesters marched and chanted outside the Ed Sullivan Theater where David Letterman tapes his show, the comic–who had apologized to Governor Sarah Palin and her family last night–riffed off the protesters, using their idiocy as a springboard for his jokes. Palin has accepted his apology, but that didn’t stop the rabid chihuahua sized group fueled by talk show doofus John Ziegler and tax challenged tea bagger Mike Leahy–some carrying signs that read "Fire the Pervert David Letterman — who were met by a few counter protesters.

Letterman had this to say:

Now when I call your name, please come forward and pick up your apology. I wanna get through this as quickly as possibly so you folks can get to the ‘Fire Dave Rally.’  It’s nice that people hate me who are no longer just part of my immediate family. My son, he’s telling everybody at school that his father is Conan!…

The good news is Sarah Palin has accepted my apology. She also accepted a $500 gift certificate from Lens Crafters. I thought that was a nice touch. I tell you, I was quite nervous about this whole thing, and I was really nervous about an apology to Sarah Palin, so when I did get my confidence up and my nerves to settle down, I rehearsed by apologizing to Tina Fey. That helped. That was a big help.

His Top Ten List was entitled Top Ten Things Overheard at the Fire David Letterman Rally and included:

Dave Who?

When

The protest was a boring flop. Perhaps the Fire Letterman brigade of senior citizens and Ziegler fans  should have shown  their distate for CBS and the sponsors of Letterman and his production company Worlwide Pants by putting on some real wide pants and getting all Hammer Time.

Fifty? Hell, we can get more folks than that to watch the kayakers on the river in the middle of town on a nice day.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:07 pm 6

While on this subject (still–thanks a bunch, Sarah): isn’t it a wee bit arrogant and presumptuous of Caribou Barbie to suppose she speaks for all young women everywhere? Of course it is.

It’s nice that people hate me who are no longer just part of my immediate family.

That’s how I knew I had made it…

While I have known people who find Letterman offensive, they generally resolve the issue by not watching his show. He who has ears, let him hear.

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:10 pm 14

wand it turned into a huge rape debate when all DL said was A Rod knocked her up in the 7th inning. Okay, statutory rape isn;t “rape”in the violent way we often think of it. It is sex wiht an underage person

puppethead | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:11 pm 15

Everyone remembers the outrage back in October, when Conan O’Brien (referencing Willow, 13 at the time) said this, right? “Saturday night, Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers’ hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter’s penalty box.”

Idiotic republican rage junkies.

hackworth1 | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:12 pm 16

What is scary is to see the number of supporters that rally to her defense and reveal the depth of their collective ignorance…but have money to contribute to Palin, the persecuted martyr…

I HATE following Palin, but she is a snake and if we aren’t vigilant she will wind up in places we don’t want her. And there aren’t many things I hate…we ALL want her to go away. She is not going to. So we will keep watching her and reporting on who she is and pray that Americans just really aren’t that dumb…

DrDick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:19 pm 24

Palin has tried to spin this as a womens rights issue, Palin accused Letterman of making a joke about statutory rape when her own legislation forced rape victims to pay for their rape kits!

LeahLB | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:22 pm 26

That is absolutely correct, and when the current Chief of Police at that time refused to go along with that policy, she replaced him. This was when she was Mayor of Wasilla

Absolute B.S. … Dave was talking about Bristol, who was at the game and Caribou Barbie made it seem as though he was talking about her younger daughter.

Classic Repug spin and to no one’s surprise, their rabid supporters took up the cudgel …

Break a Leg, Lisa !

scene at the palin pr firm:

*crickets*

lets get harrietcam harriet to head over there – we’ve not used her in a while.

LeahLB | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:24 pm 30

I find it curious that in a february interview with Matt Lauer at the Palin home in Wasilla that she was comfortable with lil 6 year old Piper (her youngest daughter)tromp around in her own high heels. And I am not talking mommies heels for dress up, but her own. It was a segment called “In the Kitchen”

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:25 pm 31

We heard the joke here an dof coure asumed it wa Bristol..a classic problem in comedy, as Dave pointed out: intent vs perception

If Palin cares so much about women then why did she ignore every complaint including my testimony, call me a liar, when we protested her appointment for Attorney General in Alaska in April – Wayne Anthony Ross? He is a classic misogynist!

i’m getting to where i can read them without noticing there is a typo lisa :)

LeahLB | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:29 pm 36

The main statement I made that took him down was reporting his statement from his mouth to my ears…”If a guy can’t rape his wife, who’s he gonna rape?”

Where was her self-righteous indignation then? As she was photographed with her arm wrapped around his and her head on his shoulder.

Whatever palin!

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:30 pm 37
In response to LeahLB @ 34

Ross made a rapey remark or two if I recal, didnt he Leah?

LeahLB | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:31 pm 38

the second one was repeated in testimony by a brave victim who heard him say what I heard and that was, “If women knew their place…there wouldn’t BE a problem with domestic violence”

Yeah…Palin is SOOO pro-women!!

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:32 pm 39

FYI, everyone, let me introduce Leah Burton to you all. SHe writes Theopalinism.com and is the lovely and brave lobbyist who brought Wayne A Ross’s remarks to the attention of the Alaska legislature when Palin put him up for Attorney General. Thanks Leah for joining us!

Millineryman | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:33 pm 40

Hello folks.

Just as Sarah was dropping off the radar screen this happens. When you have nothing to offer, and are irrelevant, you have to create controversy to try to stay relevant.

LeahLB | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:35 pm 41

You are welcome…thanks Lisa. the only way to deal with someone as narcissistic and power hungry as Palin is to find her Achilles heel. And that means really paying attention.

BS like this tantrum is definitely a diversionary tactic while she nominates yet another AG candidate and smarms her way into back door deals to get the gasline built.

But who is paying attention?

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:35 pm 42

Well wait, maybe there are some goings on in Alaska that Palin may want hidden, and she’s created a bit of smokescreen with this whole “sanctity of young womanhood” thing

LeahLB | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:36 pm 43

LeahLB | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:39 pm 47

Thank you DrDick…it is a living hell! More the reason to wrap her up and move on to the equally as frightening though not as in your face characters vying for the presidency in 2012…

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:39 pm 48

So when is a political joke going too far? And where is Palin’s outrage of the GOP making racist remarks about the President and the First Lady?

From what I recall, during the Bush years, the President was a sacred cow and heaven forfend if we joked about our glorious leader!

dosido | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:42 pm 51

Well shoot, we could use 50 protesters in Congress, maybe they can agree to fire Dave. oh, maybe not.

Why does that first lady look like the angry youtube lady from the Dem meeting in Florida? The one worked up about a woman losing the primary?

Lisa Derrick | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:43 pm 52

And also the Chelsea joke wasn’t funny…You get a lot of passes if a joke is funny.

BooRadley | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:43 pm 53

I think after his apology, DL will have Gov Gilf even more in his comedic cross hairs. I love it when he keeps inviting Sarah and Todd onto the program.

Pass the popcorn.

Suzanne | Tuesday June 16, 2009 08:45 pm 58

palin is still fuming from the invite/not invited speech/no speech fundraiser in dc. she was denied her time in the spotlight and is making sure she has media coverage. if it wasn’t letterman it would be some other ‘outrage’.

Heck, the turkey farm stunt almost did the job.

Dave’s writers who came up the slutty flight attendant remark was probably a direct result of Palin wearing a mini-skirt and her favorite high red heeled shoes to a solemn Memorial Day event as Governor of the state of Alaska and was resoundly criticized…

And NOT just by the press…but family members who found it offensive that you could see up her skirt while she sat high up on the stage.

BEYOND tacky!!

I know what you mean. I should not throw labels around so carelessly. I came into young adulthood during the Billie Jean vs. Bobby Riggs days, fulling embracing the idea of careers, equal pay for women, liking guys even after growing up in one of the most chauvinistic households you could imagine.

Actually if it weren’t for women like Harriet Christian, there’d be a lot more work to do. Looks like there still is, since a lot of these jokes are tasteless whether one is a D or an R or an I. Old boys still like their stupid jokes. Our all girls high school had to firmly nudge out the water polo coach because he was such a dinosaur in the female jokes dept.

Hey Leah, I read your latest post about hickel. thanks. I am reminded that she also bit Ted Stevens and others on the hand after they fed her, so why not hickel, too? It’s classic borderline personality disorder (sorry for the remote Bill Frist like diagnosis, but I’ve read up on it quite a bit, and have first hand experience with a similar profile, sigh.)

First of all, she perceives everything to be about her and is easily slighted. Likes to get attention “hits” with crazy making (committments to speak fall through, but has everyone else’s plans tied up to hers). Charms people into supporting her and after she gets what she needs, there is no payoff to the supporter. Supporters are discarded like empty beer cans. See: McCain, Stevens, and now Hickel. close family members and friends are used as props in her show. See: Todd, Bristol, babies, esp. Bristol’s boyfriend (come here, get lost).

America says “thanks, but no thanks!”

Do not feed the Palin emotional vampires of the world.

If you are a politician/public figure, you can not suit someone for “defamation of character” for the very reason Nicole Sandler just pointed out. When you put yourself on the public stage there are going to be people who do not agree with you and make derogatory comments.

But, Palin is a control freak…and she HATES to be crossed! no exceptions.

I just read the TOC of your book and I see you cover the personality disorder aspect of Palin. It could be her achilles heel. I mean, yes, many politicians are narcissistic, it’d be hard not to be. But it’s her need to control everyone’s perception of her that could undo her…maybe also too?

There was chocolate for dessert!

Absolutely…there is a need for public attention by those who run for office even with the best of political intentions. But I can tell you that Palin is so vindictive, and so nasty…that people in Alaska are terrified to speak up for fear of retribution.

The anger in her face about me, and that I was a “liar’ because I caught her in her BS…is a whole different persona. And by the way I wear her disdain for me as a badge of honor..

Unlike the White House correspondents dinner where the dessert was eschewed!

Yeah, the truth coming out is usually bad news for compulsive liars who count on people believing their lies.

Good for you, Leah!

Harriet Christian hates inadequate black men, but she loves her some inadequate white woman.

What a maroon.

This is the perfect opportunity to demand Palin explain why her state leads in sexual assault and abuse of children and women.
She accepted an apology for all young women. Well, now is the time to put her to the test.
Demand that she explain what she is doing to protect women in her own state! She spent all this time and energy on extracting an apology from Mr. Letterman. It would have been time well spent if she was working on policies to decrease the incident of sexual assault in Alaska.
This fake crisis by the way is an attempt to deflect scrutiny of her deal with Exxon and her pipeline.
The same Exxon that “Raped” the environment of Alaska with the major oil spill.
Lets keep an eye on Palin by all means, but we can also question her lack of concern for women and children in her own state.
She can go from fake news to fake news for the amusement of her base, but now is the time to demand action and specific policy talk from the Gov.
