Chaz Bono Honors True Identity, Announces Transgender Transition

Chaz Bono, the only child of singers Sonny and Cher famously came out of the closet as a lesbian two decades ago. Today Chaz’s spokesperson Howard Bragman announced, as reported by TMZ:

Yes, it’s true — Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity. He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz’s hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his ‘coming out’ did nearly 20 years ago. We ask that the media respect Chaz’s privacy during this long process as he will not be doing any interviews at this time.

Chaz was GLAAD’s Entertainment and Media Director, and has been a visible face in the LGBT community as a singer, songwriter, civil rights advocate, journalist, and author. His announcement, like his coming out nearly two decades ago, will hopefully positively encourage media and public perceptions of LGBT people. Thank you, Chaz for your willingness to be a public face for such personal and sensitive matters.

Neil G. Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) said in response to Chaz’s announcement:

Coming out as transgender is an extremely personal decision and one that is never made lightly. We look forward to hearing Chaz’s story in his own words in the future. GLAAD encourages media outlets to cover this story accurately, and to avoid speculation about the details of Chaz’s story before he is ready to share them.

Part of covering trangender stories is to use the name and pronoun preferred by the transgender person — in this case, referring to him as Chaz and using male pronouns.

Have a close realtive who’s TG. The guy who showed me how to shoot pool and play football and basketball was becomnming a girl. Didn’t understand it at all. Was freaked at the whole thing. If you’re ever in this situation, just know that no matter how confusing it may be to you, they need a TON of your support because they’re going to run into hostility from and be ostracized by many friends and loved ones. They need it. And so do you. There’s no reason to lose a friend or relative. What’s interesting is that I’ve heard adults say they didn’t have a problem but were concerned about what the children will think. Total BS. The kids, in my experience, have no problem. As is so often the case, the grown ups can take a cue from them.

Hey BFL – who won last night? Missed it here.

Gay Pride Day tomorrow here in Indy.

Parade (which I always seem to miss), food, music, lots of cool booths, etc. Just hope it doesn’t rain.

Gay Pride later this month here. Tampa never supported the idea so St Pete has it. This year the city wanted to play fuck-fuck over banners hung on store fronts. Backed down after the citizens, remember them, raised hell. These local pols are such rubes.

BFL, yer Magic best conjure up some magick.

Not talking ’bout it.

I’m in shock and despondent at the same time. Is that possible? Is that an emotional first? Sorry to snap at you jayt. Needless to say the Magic lost. Choked. Total collapse.

I believe in magic in a young girl’s heart. Not in The City Beautiful anymore. “Sir, where does this bandwagon stop? I’d like to get off.”

Good foe Chaz. YG folks are very brave, it’s such a battle legally, emotionally, medically and socially.

St Pete has a large theocratic base in their downtown area, and their “religion” is very anti-LGBT. Glad the citizens won out!!!
