Terrorism on US Soil? Controversial Doctor George Tiller Killed in Church Lobby. Suspect Arrested.

The suspect in this morning’s fatal shooting of controversial doctor George Tiller is in custody. Authorities have yet to release more information about the arrest.

Dr. George Tiller, the Wichita, Kansas doctor often reviled for performing later term abortions was shot and killed in the lobby of  his church at approximately 10:30 am. Tiller has long been a lightening rod for anti-abortion activists. In 1991 his clinic was the focus of Operation Rescue’s Summer of Mercy week long clinic blockades and in 1993, the doctor was shot and wounded at his clinic by abortion opponent Rachelle Shannon, who is still in prison for the crime.

Today Operation Rescue, which has a "Tiller Watch" on their wesbite,  released this statement:

We are shocked at this morning’s disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down. Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller’s family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ.

In March a Wichita jury found Tiller not guilty of illegal abortion on 19 criminal charges he faced for allegedly violating a state law requiring an "independent" second physician’s concurring opinion before performing later term abortions.

Earlier this month Tiller’s clinic was severely vandalized, reportedly asked the FBI to investigate the incident.  Wires to security cameras and outdoor lights were cut, hoes who hacked in the clinic’s roof and the buildings’ downspouts plugged. Rain poured through the roof and caused thousands of dollars of damage in the clinic.

Police were looking for white male who was driving a 1990s powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB.

UPDATE: Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue made this comment:

George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God. I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller’s killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder. And we still must call abortion by its proper name; murder.

Those men and women who slaughter the unborn are murderers according to the Law of God. We must continue to expose them in our communities and peacefully protest them at their offices and homes, and yes, even their churches.

Just what the moment called for – the soothing and sober voice of Randall Terry.

Just perfect.

Rest in peace, Doctor Tiller.

Seconded.

This is domestic terrorism, of a type that’s been extremely successful in limiting women’s reproductive choice.

Anti-choicers are worried that this will shut down discussion on Sotomayor’s views on Roe v Wade, etc. http://www.kansas.com/457/story/833995.html

Does anyone remember the pearl-clutchers going batshit crazy at the Obama report that domestic terrorism is on the rise?

If they weren’t so stupid you could almost feel sorry for them.

Randall “Terry Schiavo” Terry. Fuck you.

This is domestic terrorism. It’s funny how protesters for peace are considered threats when they protest for non vilolent solutions, and these lunatics who have a history of violence are looked as the children of god.

Know something? I have heard these stories for decades and I have finally HAD IT. I mean to the point where I want to REALLY do something.

For years, we hear “There are two sides Blah Blah Blah.” I saw the blogs take hold a few years back and thought NOW it will change. But it really hasn’t. I am told that it takes time. What? 20 more years? 50?

Isn’t it finally time to stop this SH*T?

From Daliy Kos: The Assassin

Via diarist FreeStateDem, Militia Watchdog previously reported of Roeder:

July 7, [1997], Kansas: Scott Roeder is sentenced to sixteen months in state prison for parole violations following a 1996 conviction for having bomb components in his car trunk. Roeder, a sovereign citizen and tax protester, violated his parole by not filing tax returns or providing his social security number to his employer.

He was also an active member of Operation Rescue; in 2007 a “Scott Roeder” posted this on the Operation Rescue website (which has been down throughout the day, probably more as a result of increased traffic than any sense of collective shame):

[May 19th, 2007 at 4:34 pm] Bleass everyone for attending and praying in May to bring justice to Tiller and the closing of his death camp. Sometime soon, would it be feasible to organize as many people as possible to attend Tillers church (inside, not just outside) to have much more of a presence and possibly ask questions of the Pastor, Deacons, Elders and members while there? Doesn’t seem like it would hurt anything but bring more attention to Tiller.
