Cheney and Lesbians!?: Tag Teaming Amazon in Response to Sales Ranking Censorship

burning_book1.thumbnail.jpgThe first book that popped up on Amazon this weekend when searching the word "homosexuality" is A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality. Unlike  Heather Has Two Mommies, this book’s sales ranking stayed in place during the weekend purge (as of this morning Heather has been reinstated on the ranking list along wiht dozens of other titles).

And because of the sales ranking scandal, this book’s increased visibility also has created a whole new collection of tags, 123 total, that express users’ views of the title, some of which–like abortion, porn, bdsm and "big homo propaganda," which this book most definitely is not–seem to be designed to get the book flagged and removed from the sales ranking system.

A number of of these user generated tags are quite poetic and express Amazon users’ outrage over both the book’s premise and the this weekend’s  "glitch" that resulted in loss of sales rankings for LGBT  and feminist titles. I especially like "a load of dingos kidneys," "unbridled buffoonery in the realm of hate" and the ever popular "cheney and lesbians." The number in parenthesis represents the number of times the title has been tagged with that word or phrase. Here’s some of them:

So if this ISN’T a “glitch — which it can’t possibly be — is it a hack by fundie outsiders? Is it fundie employees taking advantage of a slow weekend to de-LGBT AmazonWorld? And why is LGBT lumped in with feminine sexuality of the straight, but non-male-dominated, type?

And what will Chelsea Handler say on her show tomorrow night about her book being de-listed?

What will Ellen DeGeneres say?

Too bad Randy Shilts has left us; he’d raise a shitstorm about The Mayor of Castro Street losing its ranking.

Makes me wonder what exhausted Pastor Rick™.

Lisa, to whom should I write a smokin’-hot letter of complaint, noting how much money Amazon has made off me since it started doing business, and how outraged I am that books by and about LGBT folk just sort of “lost” their sales rankings, and/or were linked to offensive terms, through a “glitch”? Please tell me–both e-mail and snail mail names and addresses. This is appalling.

I got this from a source:

On Lisa’s blog there’s a comment asking how to contact amazon directly; would you pass this to her to post?

ecr@amazon.com

And a hint from Facebook: change your amazon search engine to amazon.ca. The Canadian site does not censor – and the GLBT books keep their rankings.
