Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 06:57 pm 6

One of my fave Oscar nom’ed songs ever is Live and Let Die..it also had a GREAT dance number…it lost to The way We Were

dmac | Sunday February 22, 2009 06:57 pm 7

Mommybrain | Sunday February 22, 2009 06:59 pm 13

Beyonce is just lovely in whatever she wears.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:00 pm 14

If I see one more performer look for their partner or the person they are supposed to be talking about or to, or singing to, I’m gonna scream. Worst stage direction, ever, for an Oscar show, hands down.

nahant | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:00 pm 15

Um. Yeah?

It reminded me a lot of Moulin Rouge.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:00 pm 17

Quick plug for movie night tomorrow at 5pm since commercials are on the teevee: we have Margaret Cho! Come by and discuss politics, her music, Prop 8, comedy…

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:01 pm 18

Baz needs to go back to the movies.

I also think performers don’t like the shiny floor.

neurophius | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:01 pm 19

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:03 pm 23

wonderful montages this year–really good show, the winners doing the intros

siri | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:03 pm 24

I’m totally in 40s hollywood here at Lisa’s place, with the winding staircase and silken gowns,
it’s allll in the energy, and Lisa does it up righteous.
it’s a total blowout fabulous partay,

ty Lisa.

can’t wait to hit the pool afterwards.
:)
chandeliers and crystal are fab, the bar is overstocked, the guests are brilliant and in the know and the inside of the inside crowd,
lovin’ it alllllll

Lisa is the sparkler of the whole event in her gown!
WHAT A HOSTESS!
what an honour!
hehe

Jane Hamsher | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:03 pm 25
In response to kensch @ 9

I actually liked it. There’s something kind of sweet and sad about the whole evening, like they’re trying to bridge the gap between celebrity and audience and reach out to people and bring them into their world for the night. It consciously evokes Busby Berkeley during the depression.

I keep tearing up. Working my way up to Loki, I suppose.

Julia | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:04 pm 26

Oh, my. I love the actors who are introducing the supporting actor nominees.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:04 pm 27

Prediction: The Best Actor award will go to either Langella or Penn, and “Milk” will win Best Picture. Mickey Rourke’s career comeback will be snuffed. Sadly.

Hard to be snarky… it’s actually enjoyable this year…

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:34 pm 83

Poor Josh Brolin, losin’ to a dead guy, just like Harry Shearer lost to George Carlin.

Hard to beat a dead guy. But then, he has the award and you’re still alive.

P.S. Did Jerry Lewis have a stroke? I know that last time I saw him few years ago he was on medications that made him look horribly bloated. Just noticed his speech and peculiar facial tics and wondered.

Jane Hamsher | Sunday February 22, 2009 07:59 pm 120

Count me among the ”anti-Slumdog backlash” backlash. Danny Boyle did a great job and put a lot of really interesting and talented people to work. It was a fantasy and watching its bones being picked over by intellectual snobs and overly earnest PC types who can’t just let it be a movie that makes people happy is really irritating.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:00 pm 121

Hmmm, that number was hugely Slumdog

Elliott | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:01 pm 122
In response to Jane Hamsher @ 120

I didn’t realize there was a “Slumdog backlash”
the awards seem to suggest Slumdog’s going to win is all I meant.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:03 pm 123

Nice message “I chose Love”

RevBev | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:03 pm 124
In response to Jane Hamsher @ 120

I have really missed the backlash, and I loved the movie. I’m in the MILK camp, mostly, because I thought it was so well done. Even more, Sean Penn was beyond fantastic…a really powerful and classic performance.

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:04 pm 125

The Academy seems very pleased with itself this year, proving they aren’t bigots by loving Slumdog MIllionaire (sorry Harvey!) just as they weren’t bigots because they loved Crash (sorry Brokeback!)

neurophius | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:04 pm 126

I liked slumdog, and do not subscribe to any backlash. haven’t seen Milk, maybe it deserves to win, but I’d be happy if slumdog won

GregB | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:04 pm 127
In response to Jane Hamsher @ 120

Here, here.

Frankly Slumdog is one of the few films that really deserves the fawning over that I usually find overbearing and contrived in a Hollywoody way.

It was a wonderful film about poor people and without any celebrities to drag it into popularity.

A deserving film if there ever was one.

Hear, hear!

Teddy Partridge | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:05 pm 129

If we’re going to award wins to movies that make people feel good, maybe there should be a category for that or for Comedy

eCAHNomics | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:05 pm 130

I liked Slumdog, but I thought the ending was completely incommensurate with the rest of the film (not that you couldn’t see it coming). Left me with an unsatisfied feeling that, if I were a judge, would cause me to seriously downgrade it.

Elliott | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:06 pm 131

sorry teddy, i think you’re forgetting that brokeback swooped some biggies that year.

Elliott | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:07 pm 134

wow
that looked really interesting, about a cellist who ends up preparing corpses for cremation

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:07 pm 135

‘india’ backlash. tech jobs exported, and hotel ownership. and lack of quality service in both arenas.

that would be my guess.

valletta | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:19 pm 151

Sorry valletta that wasn’t a response. I was going to respond about the ugliest dress, asking if you saw Jessica Beil’s dress, but after the director’s award, I wrote that instead.

solai | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:28 pm 166

I HATE these tributes to the actors. It just reminds me too much of politicians patting each other on the back.

Elliott | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:29 pm 167

I originally -and stupidly- thought they were this year’s nominees announcing themselves, when they started with best supporting actress

solai | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:29 pm 168

Oooh, that’s a pretty dress HB is wearing

solai | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:30 pm 169

I know I don’t have the ego or need to be loved that actors have but this is embarrassing.

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:31 pm 170

Wow, Angeline’s emeralds are AMAZING

Reese Witherspoon looked frightening.

-G

Nola Sue | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:34 pm 175

Addressing the nominees personally was a bit awkward, I thought. A bit squirmy, watching the gushing. But how nice to see the winners welcomed into the club. Go Kate!

Lisa Derrick | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:36 pm 178
In response to solai @ 171

Yes..it is very hard for emerald to get that big without hideous occlusions. However, they DO appear cloudy, which synthetics don’t really. They may be VERY old, or antique paste

pierce aero | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:36 pm 179

I love living away from civilization, but I wish I could walk to a theatre to see the foreign films nominated tonight. I just discovered Amazon video on demand, so there is hope. Any other ideas for us way out here (backwoods WA state)!

eCAHNomics | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:40 pm 188

DeNiro owns a house about 2 miles as the crow flies from my mid-Hudson house. Local rumor (I was able to get some good evidence in support) is that he’s spent $23 million on the property. Just to give you an idea that Hollywood is just as gross as Wall St.

pierce aero | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:41 pm 189

Lisa: Of course, I’ll have to sign up.

solai | Sunday February 22, 2009 08:41 pm 190

(grumble)

(David Carr made me watch that because he swore “Waltz With Bashir” would win) (Instead the movie won that I never heard of) (I found it on IMDB)

(”Slumdog Millionaire” looks like a fun movie)
(”Slumdog Millionaire” winning is a counter to the frivolity of Hollywood celebrating itself in the recession) (It is a movie about underdogs made by underdogs) (And the aesthetic is not Hollywood) (You could write that this was about Hollywood’s lack of self-belief but then you saw the sound guy accepting his award and you didn’t have the heart to)

Petrocelli | Sunday February 22, 2009 10:34 pm 253
In response to 4jkb4ia @ 252

The aesthetic was not Bollywood either, though some of them are taking credit.

Danny Boyle and his crew remind me of the many Western Photographers who capture the essence of India through their perspective, which no Indian is able to do.

newtonusr | Sunday February 22, 2009 10:43 pm 254
In response to Petrocelli @ 253

Not uninstructive that Boyle also directed Trainspotting, a picture that pretty much defies categorization. Speaks to his versatility.

Hey petro!

LaNona | Monday February 23, 2009 12:12 am 255

La Lisa My Sweet:

Nice job, and to be honest I have not read every single comment so maybe I missed the observation of another, but WTF was Mickey Mouse? Obviously ABC was forced to fill in with teen stars trying to rebuild the Oscar brand. Is it true–not many REAL stars showed? Made Anne H look *even* better (finally, I like her beyond her sordid love story). Did the ABC cartel have something to do with Twilight?

Swear to God, Streep and PS Hoffman must have shown up due to contractual terms up front; to be sure, both are tremendously good sports, but heck..let’s face it…there are usually bright spots in huge mega productions but it appeared as though those actors with above title credits were commanded by the opposite of the hook. It’s like they received a SUPER BRIGHT red terrorist alert and important, connected peeps stayed home. Thank you, Homeland Security.

Feel the luv,
Mona La Nona
—we must; really; you’ve been working too hard…time for a break…also, did Tina Fey and Steve Martin sort of make fun of Scientology? Methinks *oui*…oh..and…Hooray for Hollywood.
