Pre-Oscar Obscene Displays of Free Luxury Items Somewhat Reduced
It always baffles me why celebrities who make millions of dollars annually are given tons of free goods. Granted they probably re-gift them, but how does this help the economy? Spend, baby spend! Oh wait…stars’ pictures are taken with the luxe goods in give-away suites before awards shows and we the consumers then are devoured by a craving for the items. We’re the ones who are supposed to spend!
Mmmm, not so much. And in the spirit of anti-consumerism, I won’t be brand naming any of the companies which have paid their way into give-away lounges and gift bags. But suffice to say the PR spin this year is "less bling" with vacuums replacing diamond jewelry and $5,000 toilets, and companies asking for discounts to be part of the swag bags and gimme-rooms.
Granted there are still gift certificates for $3,000 worth of non-invasive aesthetic services, $18,000 watches and $10,000 spa getaways being handed out, but heck, if star takes a bauble from that gift lounge, a charitable donation will be made in his/her name by the marketing firm.
How noblesse oblige.
