I actually spent a while looking up California mandatory reporter laws because I kept wondering if the same laws that apply to children apply to adults–and while clergy and health care workers have to report child abuse, and health care workers both domestic adult and child violence, I could not find anything that legally binds clergy to report spousal/partner abuse–I guess because they’re adults, or penitent privilege?

There’s also that little matter of reporting crimes that Warren seems to be missing here.

I hope Rick and his lay counselors are up to speed on state law in CA regarding child abuse. As clergy and counselors, if they have reason to believe that abuse has taken place — not rock-solid proof, but a reasonable belief (e.g., someone told them abuse is going on) — they are REQUIRED to report it to the state.

If they aren’t doing that, the law will come down on them like a ton of bricks — as it should.
