Tacky Rubbers Exploit 9/11
Marketing takes a new low: Freedom Tower condoms, one of dozens of trademarks Torsten Blueher, a Munich-based businessman, has submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office featuring the Freedom Tower.
New York’s Port Authority and families of 9/11 victims are appalled and fighting the application which includes the slogan "Freedom Tower Make Love Not War" on the condom packaging.
Jack Lynch, whose firefighter son, Michael, died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 told the New York Post:
I find it very offensive. The idea that anyone would use something associated with 9/11 to promote any product is upsetting. But to promote condoms, that goes a step beyond.
Well, there’s nothing wrong with condoms, but marketing the Freedom Tower should fall to the Port Authority (and yeah, they’ll prolly have tee shirts). With such marketing savvy, it’s a wonder Blueher didn’t copyright "Bristol’s pistol sheath" as a condom and try to sign up Levi Johnston to market the contraceptives.
